Road Rage Triggers Van Nuys Crash, Injuring Family

By John Gregory

VAN NUYS, Oct. 10, 2007 (KABC-TV) - Police now say it was road rage and not street racing that triggered a crash in Van Nuys that critically injured a mother and her two young kids.

Family friends tell Eyewitness News one of those children has died.

We are learning more about the circumstances leading up to that horrific crash, but the end result remains the same - one local family is devastated.

The accident happened Tuesday on the 17100 block of West Sherman Way in Van Nuys.

Police have confirmed they have two suspects in custody, both of the drivers believed to be responsible for this tragedy.

According to authorities, two cars were racing down Sherman Way and weaving in and out of traffic. It ended tragically when one of those vehicles veered into some parked cars. In between those parked cars was a mother and her two children. One of those parked cars slammed into the mother, she suffered extensive injuries to her legs. She was rushed to Northridge Hospital where she is in critical condition.

A four-year-old child was rushed to UCLA Medical Center. Police say that child is still alive. However family members have told us that child has died. A two and a half month old baby was taken to Childrens Hospital, we're told that baby is in critical condition.

Two suspects are in custody. One was arrested Tuesday at the scene. Wednesday morning police announced a second suspect turned himself in. Authorities confirmed this was not street racing, but road rage.

"Entirely senseless, entirely the basis of two individuals that got into a contest of wills, if you will, over nothing more than a common traffic dispute. Over nothing more than whose car is on the roadway in front of the other person," Dep. Chief Michael Moore, of the LAPD, said.

Authorities say the suspects are facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon. It could go up to second degree murder though, if one of the victims dies. Family members do tell us the four year old has died, so charges could be changing as a result of that.

5-year-old dies of road-rage injuries

RESEDA - Police said today a 5-year-old boy injured during a road rage crash in Reseda died at a hospital, and his mother and younger sister remained in critical condition.

The boy, Ayman Arif, died about 11 last night, said Kevin Maiberger of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Maiberger said the two motorists who had been booked for attempted murder would face probable charges of second-degree murder.

Brian Barnes, 44, of Northridge, and Armando Gamboa Ayon, 19, of Pacoima, were driving a black Nissan and a red Camaro Tuesday afternoon on West Sherman Way, between Balboa Boulevard and Louise Avenue, when they got into a dispute, according to the LAPD.

Ayon, who was driving the Nissan, lost control and plowed into the rear of a parked car, knocking it into a second parked car.

A 31-year-old woman and her two children -- a 5-year-old boy and a 2- month-old girl -- who were between the two parked cars, were crushed, said LAPD Officer Jason Lee.

The three, all natives of India, were hospitalized, and the boy was placed on life support, police said.

LAPD Detective Bill Butos said the motorists were "cutting each other off, they were jockeying for position. They were tapping on the brakes, one of the vehicles was tapping on the brakes, trying to cause the other vehicle to ram into the vehicle. They cannot point to the other individual and say, well, that person started it."
