BPG's Bad Azz Personal Business Review
« on: July 17, 2001, 06:44:01 PM »
Tell Me What You Think OK?

When Bad Azz came out in September of 1998, many people were not ready to hear his music. At the time, westcoast music was at the lowest of low with many issues surrounding their type of rap. Bad Azz was a newcomer who became a background voice during that year. Well since his first release Word On Tha Streets the westcoast music that was so low was able to get major boosts with returns of some of their greatest performers. The shift in the music gave Bad Azz a better chance to be heard. With his new album, Personal Business, Bad Azz tries to hit the listeners with his personal thoughts, hence the album title. The albums style switches from the heaviest bass bumper to more serious songs. One of these songs is Too Many Choices. The intro of the song starts out with a whirling wind effect almost giving you the symbol of many choices. Bad Azz shares the song with Lil Tip Toe and Lil Beau. Bad Azz however looks at life in a very strong way that most rappers nowadays dont share. His verses share his life decisions, his failures and concerns.

Recently I've been talking to myself a lot
I answer back
Thinking I ain't suppose to answer that
Is that a fact
Am I losing it for what I say
Or Is It cause a Niggas Talking and No One Is There

Not only does Bad Azz show his emotions on the softer songs, he isn't afraid to share it with club bangers, and let me tell you, this album is filled with bouncers. The most surprising of the bouncers, is the song How We Get Down. The song takes you back to the late 70's. It almost makes you feel like your in the middle of a disco dance floor. Bad Azz isn't alone on this track either. He appears with lablel mates Doggy's Angels who show off their talented skills on the song. The song is one of the brighter elements of the album, but that doesn't make the album so much different. The song When You See Me is a song that really starts out like a weird space movie. Snoop Dogg changes styles on this song and becomes Snoopy Collins, his alter ego. Instead of coming clean and fresh with a nice verse, Collins spits his low and mangled speech over the tracks beat. It could be a turn off to some listeners as it is something that really doesn't attract many. However, the track does get better when the song actually begins to start, but it really shouldn't start a few minutes into the song. The album quickly changes styles again to the track Dogghouse Ridaz. This is definetly a song for Bad Azz and his label Dogghouse Records. The song features Snoop, Goldie Loc, Kokane, and Suga Free. Its definetly a favorite of mine on this album because it brings that feeling of a care free life with no worries. Although its nice to hear a track like this, the mood changes again with the song I Don't Wanna Die. This song is quite strong in showing the street life. Bad Azz gives a shout out to Pac by saying

I guess they think since pac died, we gonna let up or something, Rest In Peac Mr. Shakur, while we let these niggas have it

Daz Dillinger is also on the microphone here and he comes off quite well, but the words each rapper spits really brings the idea of a hard life on the street. The song is one of many that share the spotlight. The album is full of great songs, in fact its hard to find a song that really isn't part of the light. However, with some of the antics brought to us by Snoopy Collins, the album isn't perfect, but the album should definetly not be overlooked since there are many songs like Life Ain't Really What It Seems To Be that share good ideas about what life is about. In fact the album seems to keep this theme through the party bouncers to the softer jams. Bad Azz should definetly not be ignored this time around. He is bringing a message almost every rapper is ignoring and with this album, hopefully a good shift is near.

RATING: 4.3/5.0
Jams: 4.5/5.0 Lyrics: 4.0/5.0

I think you're too generous with your ratings.... I dont even think it deserves a 4 or anything above....

Dont get me wrong though.... I bought the cd and I'm happy with it... it bumps. But still, keep the ratings real, IMO a 4 and above should be hard to come by.... not just any cd deserves more than a 4 and although Bad Azz is a tight cd..... I dont think it has 4 and above potential.

3.5..... nothing more nothin less...

It's a good album... I dont regret buying it AT ALL... it's just that I'm not tryna look at it from a Fan's point of view... If you're gonna try and rate something.... you can't have any bias opinions on it.

I wouldn't go around giving too many people 5.0 ratings cuz that would be a Classic...... and Classics are hard to come by. Albums that are VERY VERY good not Classic material would get 4.0 - 4.5....

Bad Azz is a good album...... but it isnt a GREAT album... and it's NOWHERE NEAR CLASSIC.

4.0-4.5 are almost Classic ratings.... therefore, Bad Azz gets 3.5

I hear you criminal, but I do think it is a Very Very good album, and I try my best to not be bias. Its hard cause you are a fan of so much of his music, but I did my best to show positive and negatives and in the end I agree that it is a very very good album... and hey everyone has their opinions... ya know. I also do try to take into account what the rapper is saying... I don't just want a clear cut party album... that doesn't hit me right... its a real solid album with very good messages, so I add points to that... without that creativity it wouldn't get me in the right mood... so I hear ya... we each got our ways
