Another Mellowman Question!
« on: July 08, 2001, 08:25:20 PM »
Mellowman,I Got A Great Question!

Recently, Dre Turned Down The Opportunity To Work With Michael Jackson.  He Stated That He Only Wanted ToWork With ARtists FromHis Past, Or With New Artists. I'm SureHIs Schedule Also Played A Big Part.

Now, I'm A Huge Dre Fan, Big Supporter, I'm Sure You Know That.  He's My Favorite Hip Hop Personality...

My Question Is, I Can't Help But Wonder If Dre's Decision To Not Work On TheAlbum Had Anything To Do WIth M.J. Being Perceived As Gay By Some People Ignorant To M.J.'s Situation.  Alot Of People Believe M.J. Is Gay, Even Though He Isn't.  Dre Finds Himself In The Same Situation, After He Was Ignorantly Called Gay By Tupac.

Did That Have Anything To Do With It? I Know After Being Called Gay, Dre Is Kind Of Angry Towards Gays (I've Seen Interviews Where He Gets Bent Out Of Shape, And Basically Disses The Hell Outta Gays)...

When I First Saw He Turned M.J. Down, I Immediately Thought Maybe He Did So Because He Wasn't Sure If M.J. Was Gay Or Not, And Didn't Want To Take THeChance Of Associating Himself With A Homosexual.

LOL, I Know That's Crazy, But Do You Have Any Comments?  I Can't Understand Why Dre Would Work With Rakim, No Doubt, McCartney, And Other Established Acts, And Not M.J., WhenTHis Album Of M.J.'s Is Gonna Be HUGE.

BTW, I Am In NO Way Insinuating That Dre Or M.J. Are Gay, They Both Are Fathers, For 1.  Neither One Is, But I Think Dre's Gotten ToTHe Point Of "Enough's Enough", And Wants To Make It Clear That He Ain't Cool With Gays.

the reason had nothing to do with michael jackson's sexual orientation - whatever it is. it was about control and being able to work together. and it wasn't about the money. if dre was looking for a big payday he would have jumped on this project  in a second. he could have made up to one million dollars per track! and mj was hoping to get dre to produce most of the album. the main reason dre didn't work with mj was that mj wanted to tell dre what music to make and be in total control. mj was going to be demanding of dre and it probably would not have worked out. plus mj was asking dre to put a lot of time and work into the project. and dre wanted to focus on more important projects. dre has huge respect for michael. dre has turned down  madonna a few times for the same reasons. dre wants every artist to be themselves and put in a lot of input into the songs. but at the same time dre wants final say and control of the project. mj telling dre how to produce tracks just ain't gonna work. and to clarify dre is not doing a collab with mccartney. they will probably get together a few times but basically dre is just remaking a few beatles tracks for a tribute album.
dres comments that he never works with established artists obviously isn't totally accurate. dre has worked with people like no doubt,ll cool j,  and other established artists on a few collaboration tracks, but not complete albums. rakim is dre's idol and dre has been wanting to work with rakim for over a decade. people have forgotten about rakim's incredible skills and dre wants to help cement rakims place in history as arguably the greatest mc ever.
but as you know dre spends most of his time with unestablished artists who are are untapped and unknown. unlike pop producers like rodney jerkins dre don't produce for every star who asks him.its easy to work with stars all the time.and you get paid nicely. working with unproven talent takes time, effort, sacrifice, and involves taking huge risks. dre is willing to do that with the people he believes in. and double figure artists have become stars because dre took a chance on them, maximized their talents and used his legendary production and mentoring talents and helped them blow up.
as far as dre's opinion of gays he has been a bit harsh or indifferent in a few interviews and i'm sure a lot of that is trying to seperate himself from the false gay rumors. its human nature to get a little defensive when someone questions your manhood. but for the most part dre ignored the lies and rumours. why? because dre knew it wasn't true, dre's friends and everyone who knows dre knew it wasn't true. suge and tupac knew it wasn't true.  the countless women hes been with know it isn't true. and most importantly dre's family, wife and children knew it wasn't true. dre had too much respect for tupac to get in a beef. he knew suge put him up to it and pac wasn't strong enough to refuse to do it.
in real life dre doesn't agree with or support homosexuality but he doesn't degrade anyone who is. dre's not that type of person. and during the grammy's dre met elton john a few times and shared a few laughs with him before the grammy performance with eminem.
i hope this answers your questions.

I ain't gonna start on Dre but how can you say Tupac ignorantly called Dre gay. he was just doing what Suge Knight wanted him to do and they were like close so if Suge told Pac to do summin, Pac would. So it was more that Suge is ignorant instead of Pac.

At the time it was said the Dre booted Royce from the project after Royce's manager (not Royce) went and spat his mouth to a magazine (XXL I think) around claiming that Eminem and Royce were in charge in the studio and that they pushed Dre around like he was a little kid.

Ignorant Is Not Necessarily A Derogatory Word, I'm Just Saying That Tupac Spoke On Something Without Knowing About It.

Tupac's The Man, I'm Not Saying Anything Bad About Him, But He Didn't Even Know Dre, So How Could He Say That? That'd Be Like Me Saying You're Gay, I Don't Know That, So It'd Be An Ignorant Statement.

Peace.
