I'm On My East Coast Shit Pt. 3; The Notorious B.I.G.
« on: November 27, 2007, 02:16:04 PM »
what it do homies? by now i'm sure all y'all know what this is bout. If ya don't, quit sleepin!!
pt.1 was on jay-z (peep that muthafucka) http://www.dubcnn.com/connect/index.php?topic=158921.0
pt.2 was on nas (peep that as well) http://www.dubcnn.com/connect/index.php?topic=159900.0

so anyways who better to follow up jigga & mr.escobar than the notorious himself, right?? it's a short 2 albums (sadly) so lets get right into it 8)

1. Ready To Die - Classic debut. Real difficult to debut betta than this shit right here. A hip-hop star is born mutha fuckas. Just about every damn thing bout this album is perfect. I can't give it a 10/10 cuz i don't believe in a such thing really. That means every lil element of every fuckin song gotta be perfect (lyrics, beat, hooks, flow etc.) This one is bout as close is it gets. Overall Rating - 9.4

Top 5 Tracks (No Order)
Juicy
Warning
Big Poppa
The What
Suicidal Thoughts
Wack Tracks
None (but the worse song on the album is "friend of mine" i'd say)

2. Life After Death - Now I was a bit skeptical going into this one. No matter the artist, double discs are usually pretty shady. Twice the material usually means lots of filler. Sadly, this was Big's last pre-death album, so lets get into it. I figured to  be fair, i'd break down each disc and do it on it's own

Disc 1: - Ain't shit changed here between this one and ready 2 die (good thing). Actually, I think this disc is BETTER than biggie's debut album. The Lyrics hit me harder & the beats is on point. Right now, this disc is on par with nas' Illmatic for me. Disc 1 Overall Rating - 9.8
Top 5 Tracks
Hypnotize
What's Beef
Mo Money, Mo Problems
Somebody Gotta Die
Fuckin You Tonight
Wack Tracks
None.

So I was quite impressed with the first disc. Like previously stated I was curious to peep this double album because
a) biggie is so dope
b) yet no artist has been able 2 make a flawless double album IMO (hip-hop at least, can't speak on any other genres).

Well I (personally) found out that Biggie, although really, real dope, ain't no different. Disc 2 is also a great album, but ain't even comin close to touchin disc 1, or big's debut LP. Disc 2 Overall Rating - 8.8
Top 5 Tracks
Sky's The Limit
The World Is Filled...
My Downfall
Long Kiss Goodnight
You're Nobody (Til Somebody Kills You)
Wack Tracks
Another
Playa Hater

For me, playa hater was quite wack. Another was pretty fuckin average. Even besides them 2 songs, the overall material (besides the 5 songs i listed + notorious thugs & goin back to cali) wasn't touchin disc 1. Miss u, 10 crack commandments & nasty boy were pretty good tho.

Overall Album Rating - 9.3/10

As u can see disc 2 brought it down a lil bit.

All in all, Biggie got a dope, yet short catalogue. I always spoke on him (ignorantly) that "no way he could be the greatest of all time or even close 2 it because of how short is catalogue is". Well now that i've so to say "educated" myself on the notorious B.I.G, I still don't think he's the greatest of all time, but could defanitely see why somebody would place him in the top 3-5. Biggie lives forever y'all.

Also y'all mutha fuckas drop ya opinion on who u wanna see next done? And also, I ain't only doin east, just started with it. I got no problem makin ma next artist/group from the west (that series'll be called "throwin up tha dub") and even the south ("on a down south tip".) By the time this shit is done, I hope 2 many, many more in the books. Scarface, Geto Boyz, Ice Cube, 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Outkast, 8Ball & MJG, UGK are on my immediate list, but those + more will be done, believe that.

Let me know who y'all wanna see done next (don't gotta be that from list).

I'm out.

Nice one. +1 Luna
I'm cosigning almost everything.

I'd propose Three Six Mafia, Ludacris, Yukmouth, Atmosphere, Cunninlynguists... Didn't see those on your list.

Good review. It's cool you're putting in effort to checking out these classics. Other great east coast catalogues I reccomend are Rakim, LL Cool J up to 'G.O.A.T.', Big Daddy Kane, Gang Starr, AZ, Mobb Deep, and Masta Ace.

as a young passionate fan of hip-hop, i feel like i owe it to myself
will do Rakim & A.Z for sure. possibly LL, who knows. same goes for big daddy kane & gang star. Possibly Mobb Deep, doubt it with ace.
