FABIO CAPELLO says he will turn England into world beaters . . . by becoming a shrink.

The legendary Italian boss admitted he was shocked at England’s failure to qualify for Euro 2008.

And he insists he can help superstars like David Beckham and Michael Owen overcome what he described as the “mental block” that hinders them when they play for their country.

Capello said: “There is tremendous difference in the attitude they show from one game to the next. How can players of the level of Beckham or Owen have performances so different when they play for their national team?

“It’s clear the shirt is very heavy even for those great champions.

The manager has a fundamental role to play in this situation. He has to be more of a psychologist than a tactician or a technician.

'Mental block'
“It’s clear there is a mental block — otherwise how can you explain their elimination from Euro 2008?”

The former AC Milan and Real Madrid boss, 61, insisted England seemed all at sea both in the 2-1 loss in Russia — when they capitulated despite taking the lead — and in the Black Wednesday Wembley defeat to Croatia.

He said: “We managers ask ourselves how can England, with the players they have, not qualify for the 2008 European Championships.

“The English team, much like the Spanish team, wins very little despite having some very good players.

“I’ve watched some of the games of the English.

“In the match against Russia in Moscow they played defensively.

“They sat right outside their own 18-yard box for 90 minutes despite having the advantage after taking a 1-0 lead in the first half.

“Against Croatia at Wembley they were all playing up front.

“They lost 2-3 when a draw at home would have been enough for them to qualify.”

Beckham inspired a second-half fightback from 2-0 down until Mladen Petric’s winner.

WHAT THEY SAY

"With Capello you can start dreaming of winning something again. He'll give you the best chance you have had for ages, a better chance than Sven-Goran Eriksson did."
Former Italy coach Dino Zoff

"He has always been a winner wherever he has gone. Fabio thinks about England as the mother of the game and the teacher of football."
Capello's former assistant at AC Milan Franco Baldini

"I have known Fabio Capello for many years. I was his opponent in Serie A for 10 years. He is a very good man and manager. Capello is one of the best managers you can find."
Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, who is now at Manchester City

"This man will not suffer fools. He will drop people. Not only is he a good tactician, he is a good psychologist."
Former AC Milan and England striker Mark Hateley

"He's a person I know very well. He's a great professional with unquestionable credentials to do the job. He has a very distinct style of play. As far as the language barrier, I remember a manager's meeting in Switzerland and he was speaking in English. I actually think he speaks it quite well."
Tottenham boss Juande Ramos

"Capello is ideal for this job. If England are capable of winning something, I truly believe Capello is the man who will bring it out in them."
Arrigo Sacchi, who Capello succeeded at AC Milan in 1991

"He is a great manager. He is a good worker and has clear ideas what to do. He is a winner. If you want to express something it is not easy as I found out. But he has experience and I am sure he will handle it."
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez

"Capello certainly fits the bill with all the titles he has won at all levels of football. He has proved himself to be a winner with success everywhere he has been."
England midfielder Frank Lampard

"You do not see him laughing much - he is moody. But he knows what he wants. You have to go his way or you will get in trouble."
LA Galaxy manager Ruud Gullit (won the European Cup while playing under Capello at AC Milan)

"Even when Jose Mourinho was in the running I believed that Capello had even more charisma, talent and experience for a challenging job like this one.
Former Chelsea and Italy striker Gianfranco Zola

"I think he can win the World Cup with England and make them into a team feared and respected throughout the world. He is one of the best."
Juventus manager Claudio Ranieri

"He is a difficult guy. He is a professional and is very demanding but I believe that this is the thing that England need."
Former France international Marcel Desailly (played for Capello at AC Milan)

"He just oozes class and he has got the gravitas to take any job in the world. He has a fantastic lot of talent to choose from and I'm sure Capello will have England as one of the top nations in the world again."
Birmingham manager Alex McLeish

"I'm sad to be honest. I'm a proud English manager and I would have loved an Englishman to have been in charge."
Reading boss Steve Coppell

WHAT HE SAYS

"People say I am impatient when it comes to football and they are right."
After Real Madrid's 1-0 win over Real Zaragoza in January 2007

"I can't stand the rubbish that gets talked about by everyone, players, fans, the media, club officials. Why should I waste my time listening to people who are clearly less intelligent than me?"
After the same match against Zaragoza

"The players have to know we are here to work, to be serious and professional, but I would not call it an iron fist."
After he banned the players' families from the training ground during part of his reign at Real Madrid because he did not want any distractions

"How can players of the level of Beckham or Owen have performances so different when they play for their national team? It is clear the shirt is very heavy even for those great champions. The manager has to be more of a psychologist than a tactician or a technician. There is a mental block - otherwise how can you explain their elimination from Euro 2008?"
Interview with the Sun

"The challenge of coaching a national side like England would be something different. The job is not about coaching every day...It would be a very difficult challenge but a very exciting one."
Interview with BBC Football Focus in November 2007

"In my house there are no pictures of me with trophies or cups. Those sorts of things are closed away inside boxes."
Interview in September 2006 on Uefa's website

"I'm a man from the country so I like to be on the pitch. I was eager to teach the young kids how to improve in this world both technically and as a person."
Talking earlier this year about starting out as a youth coach

"You have to find a way to play according to the players you have in the squad. Never stick to only one system. I think that is the biggest mistake you can make. Many people think there is one only good system but I think there are many."
His repsonse when asked if he had any advice for young coaches

  • You'll never ever win the big one ya monkey fucks!
If England don't win anything under Capello then they are just destined to be losers.

Everything this man touches turns to gold.

If I was English and cared about the national team I'd be going like this:

   :raisetheroof: :yikes:  :nahnah: :monkey: :monkey_dance2: :cow:  :banana_rock: :banana_dsf: :banana_dss: :banana_cow: :banana_trippin: :banana_llama:

Looks like failing to qualify for Euro 2008 is the best thing that could have happened to England

They better make it now, or just retire the whole national team

Capello is a genius

very good choice, couple of things i wanna say though. Mainly to the english managers bitching about a foreigner in charge.

im fed up of hearing them say it should go to an englishman, i dont see any english managers as good as capello.

theres no englishmen who have won titles, anyone saying it should be coppell, curbishly, allardyce are off there head. Havent they learnt from the mcclaren fiasco !

also people are moaning we wont play the english way as in a high tempo. When r they gonna realise all the english way has brought us is failure, the english way merely coovers up a lack of techincal ability.

props.

Cant aee Scholes coming back though, Erikkson and McClaren both tried i think he enjoys the time with his family rather than been away with england for long periods of time.

He is a technically gifted player who has been playing the football of his career over the last 2 maybe 3 seasons.

All you need to do is watch a video of Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney on youtube who will tell you "if you are in his team in training, then you will win".

But to be honest, I don't like him. For such an established pro, he is rash in the tackle and has the temper of a 17-year-old Alan Smith.

But when he scores like he did against Villa last season, who cares?

I think hes a good choice, but we havent got an important game for ages now so its a bit pointless to me. The press are just guna get on his back.
