MMA: Chuck Liddell & George St. Pierre Victorious!!

LAS VEGAS -- Georges St. Pierre not only defeated Matt Hughes to become the UFC interim welterweight champion, but he also treated Hughes the way Hughes treated most of his opponents in his previous 42 career wins.

St. Pierre proved that his claims of being a world-class wrestler were no idle boast as he took the match to Hughes' strength.

After Hughes tried to confuse St. Pierre by fighting left handed, an interesting twist that didn't help him, St. Pierre scored the first takedown two minutes into the match. Hughes couldn't do anything but hang on.

St. Pierre used a new tactic of using his chest to drop hard and crush Hughes' face, slamming his head into the mat.

The first round time limit was the only thing that saved Hughes, as St. Pierre was working for an armbar as time expired.

In the second round, the story was the same, as St. Pierre exploded with a takedown. Hughes managed to escape a choke attempt, but with time running out, St. Pierre caught him in an armbar. Hughes screamed "tap" to end the match at 4:54.

LAS VEGAS – It took seven years to get Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva together. Turns out it was well worth the wait.

In one of the most heated atmospheres in the history of mixed martial arts, Liddell and Silva went toe-to-toe in a 15-minute slugfest at the Mandalay Bay Events Center on Saturday night. Liddell, the former UFC light heavyweight champion, ended a two-fight losing streak with a unanimous decision win. The scores were 29-28, 30-27 and 29-28. This reporter had it at 29-28 Liddell.

While Liddell is mainly known as a counter fighter, he took it to Silva in the first round, initiating the bulk of the action and controlling the octagon. The entire first round stayed standing.

Silva came out on fire in the second round, getting the better of the standup and bringing out the noise from his supporters in the crowd. Silva managed to rock Liddell several times, dropping him to the mat at one point. Liddell rallied late, scored a takedown, and had position on the top as the round ended.

Liddell surprised everyone with a takedown to open the third. Silva got up, but Liddell continued to dictate the action, rocking Silva along the fence and nearly putting him away midway through the round. Silva was clearly gassing at the end of the round, and Liddell ended any chances of a Silva home run finish by taking him down again with about 20 seconds left.

Though “The Iceman” usually downplays the importance of his individual fights, he acknowledged this match was something special. “Yeah, I knew it was a big fight for everyone,” he said. “It was nice to get back on track. I want to get my title back.”

anyways, the card was dope last night.  The Chuck/Wandy fight really did live it up to the hype, I was suprised by that.  And Im glad GSP beat Hughes of course, GSP, still my favorite MMA fighter.  Love watching that guy fight!

Griffin has the next title shot against Rampage, and no, I want to see Chuck fight and win again before considering giving him a title shot.

Excellent fight card, although I am still baffled how the Eddie Sanchez fight made the main card, let alone infront of Machida-Soko.
