Audio Problem
« on: January 11, 2008, 02:18:44 PM »
Okay, I decided to hook my laptop to a stereo. I bought a phono cable, hooked it up, but the sound is really fucked. Scratching and shit. It sounds like the speakers are blown the fuck out, but they ain't. I've tried to play a cd, and it worked fine. And it ain't nothing wrong with the output on my pc, cause I'm using my headphones right now, works fine.
The red input is in the red output and the white input is in the right output.
Is there anything wrong with the cable?

if it is a new cable then it is highly unlikely that it is the problem. it is most likely the stereo, are you using the correct input on the stereo? is the cable going directly from the laptop into a speaker, or an amp, or receiver? have you tried shifting the placement of the cable around during audio play?

Well, the stereo is kinda old, I've had it for ages. There's only one kind of input on the stereo (Phono). The cable is connected directly from my pc to my stereo. Yeah, I've tried shifting placement of the cable during play, doesn't help.

Do I need specific phono cable or what?

naw you need a new stereo. unless there really is a problem with the cable, maybe try a new one before you go buy a new speaker

what output on the laptop are you using? if its just the headphone socket which is fine for other connected devices (like headphones) then it shoudn't be anything to do with the laptop - either the cable or the stereo is at fault. and if that volume thing worked then its just that the fact the signal/cable/connection isn't very clean that shit is distorting. definitely best to send a lower quality signal out at a low volume if your gonna be amplying it anyway...

i always had my laptop connected to my stereo from the headphone socket before i got a decent soundcard and it was ok. the only time i heard a terrible muffling sound when connecting stuff together was through really bad line-inputs....

Yeah, it's the default headphone socket I use. I've had the laptop connected to a (different) stereo before, I didn't have a problem then.

must be a crappy input on the stereo then but i thought phono connections are generally pretty decent. cable for each channel and decent size socket, depends on the stereo i guess...

Considering the age of your receiver, it sounds like you`re hooking the output of your Laptop into an input that is specifically built and designed for use with Turntables only.
With this in mind, all `Phono`inputs boost up the Bass Frequencies and cut down High Frequencies since all Vinyl are recorded using the inverse. (RIAA Curve) Since this is completely unnecessary for external sound sources other than Vinyl Records, your Laptop sounds all distorted.

Turning it down isn`t going to help. Look for another set of inputs marked as either Line In, Line, Aux, etc. Disconnect any other device from them temporarily to test them out if needed.

Keep the Laptop Volume at around 75% and control the level from your Receiver instead.
