This is the type of shit that makes me love film, that short sequence and cut tells so much. It just mind fucks you.

i watched it once when i was young and was bored shitless. but there's a lot of metaphors and shit. like i said DDEEEEP movie.

The first tool of man cuts to one of the most advance "tools" of man.  That says it all right there about what type of movie you should be expecting with 2001.

not only a personal fav of yours, but one of the most famous cuts in movie history I'd say, and rightly so...

I really like the movie, but somehow my personal feeling about it is a 9/10, but it's hard to "explain" why not a 10. Timeless classic in any case

yes, you def have to...and in case you haven't seen them either, there's also "The Shining" and "Full Metal Jacket". "Eyes Wide Shut" is a good movie too IMO

Yeah it's very slow paced, but it's slow paced for a reason.  Kubrick wants to slowly chip in a message here and there.  There are some shots where you it's some dude walking in the spaceship.  When you see a scene that last so long, you start telling yourself "Hmm, you know these guys outside of Earth are basically babies.  They have to learn how to walk, eat, and take a shit in outer space."

I tried reading the book, but after the first chapter (which was amazing) I started to lose interest. Besides through numerous cultural references I know a fair amount of what happens.

Just answer me this: The part part about the primates have anything to do with that actual story, or is it just to set tone/mood/mindset/whatever of the story?

It's suppose to show the contrast between man and ape.  Remember how they encounter the monolith again at the moon?  The ape reaction was so much different to the human reaction.  The apes were really scared but curious going after it.  The humans on the other hand just didn't give a fuck and walked to it and even decided to videotape it.  What I believe, and many others as well,  is that some sort of alien put the monolith on Earth and the Moon to see how far has mankind gone, in terms of evolution.

It's probably obvious in the book, but the origin is unknown in the film.

reaaaaaaaaally good movie,  but i like  "2010: The year we make contact"........"Mission to Mars".....and "Contact"  better,  hell... id even put "Sunshine" up there
Its tough to put one ahead of the other... 'cause they're all so good and I love that type of movie
