How does 'karma' work

You know, like how on every post there's a 'karma' ranking below each screen name?  I have a score of -1, I don't know how thats possible, someone please explain

Once u reach 500 posts, u have the option to "Give Props" or "Diss 'Em!" The links will appear below the members' names once u reach enough posts. Each prop counts as +1 and each diss counts as -1.
