Carter could be dealt as trade deadline approaches

Vince Carter may be the next superstar to leave the New Jersey Nets.

After trading star point guard Jason Kidd to the Dallas Mavericks this week, the Nets could continue to revamp their roster prior to Thursday’s trade deadline by dealing Carter.

It would be the latest in a slew of deals in one of the most intriguing trade seasons in recent memory. With teams having until 3 p.m. Thursday to swap players, Carter is the biggest remaining name being bandied about.

According to several reports, the Nets had preliminary discussions with the New York Knicks and Miami Heat regarding a three-team deal, which would send Carter to the Knicks.

The Nets reportedly would receive the expiring contracts of Ricky Davis and Jason Williams from the Heat, who would get much-maligned New York center Eddy Curry.

While its unclear if that trade has any legs, Carter remains a candidate to leave New Jersey, which gave the superstar swingman an ill-advised four-year, $62 million contract extension last summer.

Carter also has been rumored in a deal for Indiana Pacers forward Jermaine O’Neal.

Nets general manager Rod Thorn, who has defended Carter’s contract extension all season, most likely would not have inked him if he expected to deal Kidd.

A nine-time All-Star, Kidd spent the last six-plus seasons in New Jersey, transforming the Nets from a perennial bottom-feeder into a two-time Eastern Conference champion.

But Kidd, who turns 35 on March 23, had become increasingly disgruntled with the mediocrity of the Nets, who are just 24-30 this season after going 41-41 last campaign.

The Nets finally granted Kidd’s wish Tuesday, trading the point guard to the Mavericks for a five-player package - headlined by guard Devin Harris - and two first-round picks.

Kidd wasn’t the first superstar to be dealt out West during this trade season, which has seen multiple blockbuster deals pulled off well in advance of Thursday’s deadline.

Earlier this month, the Los Angeles Lakers acquired center Pau Gasol, and the Phoenix Suns got future Hall of Fame center Shaquille O’Neal. In response, the San Antonio Spurs acquired defensive-minded center Kurt Thomas from Seattle on Wednesday.

While most of the deals have seen players come over to the already loaded West, the East wasn’t to be left out, as the contending Atlanta Hawks acquired veteran point guard Mike Bibby from the Sacramento Kings on Saturday.

The Kings, however, might not be done dealing. Defensive-minded forward Ron Artest has been rumored to be on the block, but trade talks with the Denver Nuggets reportedly have cooled.

It has been no secret that Chicago Bulls center Ben Wallace is available, but no one seems to want to take on a contract which pays him $15.5 million this season, $14.5 million next campaign and $14 million in 2009-10.
