ftermathmusic.com:
Wassup Che? How is life treating you these days?

Che Vicious
Everything is good Just got back from Detroit.

Aftermathmusic.com:
To start it off, please go ahead and introduce yourself to everybody!

Che Vicious
The name is Che Vicious, aka the producer formerly known as Che Guevara.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Can you tell us a little about your background and where you grew up?

Che Vicious
My Background lets see I grew up in Boston, went to school in Virginia. Got on wit Teddy Riley (around the same time as the Neptunes and Rodney Jerkins). Then I moved to NYC in 96.

Aftermathmusic.com:
What about influences from the past?

Che Vicious
As far as influences I have a few : Curtis Mayfield, Quincy Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Dr. Dre, Dj Premier,Rick Rubin, Jack White, Omar Rodriguez (from Marz Volta)

Aftermathmusic.com:
When did you start to play instruments and which instruments are you playing?

Che Vicious
Took a lil piano an drums as a kid but the only thing i really remember from those lessons is how to read music. Now I'm hack i try to play everything piano, bass, guitar, drums, I have a sitar and a vioin as well and all types of percussion stuff. I take piano lessons right now. I have an Aunt that loves music and had a crazy record collection (i probably jacked most of it) who introduced me to soul music. Early on I met Lord Finesse and Showbiz and Buckwild and Bob Gibson (i'll record collector from Boston) and they introduced me to digging and sampling. I'm a beat dude i'm nice as shit on an mpc but because I'm older and have had a lot of experiences I'm a good producer and working with Dre first hand for the last 3-4 years i've felt like a martial artist who climbed to the top of the mountain to train with the master sensei and now I feel like an assassin.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Do you think, its important for a producer to play instruments?

Che Vicious
I think all these kids out there making beats better learn how to play there is not enough words to Emphasize the importance of playing instruments!!!!!! Don't get me wrong you can be a great producer like Rick Rubin and not play a thing but honestly the game has changed and the songwriter and the producer are the same person in the modern definition. Most of these kids that think they're a producer can't even define the term. If you wanna be one you should do your research. I love beats and sampling and all that but your limited so if you wanna career in this business learn how to play or surround yourself with talent.

Aftermathmusic.com:
How's Che Vicious working ... Let's talk about the production process on making beats. What's the first thing you do when you make a beat?

Che Vicious
Beat making process: no rules

Aftermathmusic.com:
Who are your main inspirations as far as production? How did you come to that opportunity?

Che Vicious
Don't really have an answer for this one

Aftermathmusic.com:
What would you say is the motivation that drives you to keep making music?

Che Vicious
Motivation is I haven't made my best record yet and this is what I do, this is how I feed my family. I got 2 lil ones that keep me motivated.

Aftermathmusic.com:
How do you make sure the drums fit the beat?

Che Vicious
I'm a Drum fanatic, and ususally I start with the drums they motivate the beat.

Aftermathmusic.com:
When you sample, what type of sample do you look for?

Che Vicious
Very ecletic samples ususally but if something well known fits what i'm doing then so be it.

Aftermathmusic.com:
What equipment do you use?

Che Vicious
A crazy space age shit and and a mpc (i use to work with the composer Hanz Zimmer and he taught me a lot about technology)

Aftermathmusic.com:
When did you first meet Dr. Dre, Mike Lynn or Kirdis Postelle and what would you like to tell us about them?

Che Vicious
They just real down to earth people. Good peoople.

Aftermathmusic.com:
A 1st meeting with Dre. How does it look like?

Che Vicious
First time I met Dre was a social christmas kind of kick it thing very casual just listening to music at the studio and hanging out a lil.

Aftermathmusic.com:
What would you like to say about the label Aftermath? I mean, signed on the math - Is all of that exciting for you right now?

Che Vicious
Tough Crowd- Aftermath is the big leagues if you ain't strong minded and talented and creative don't bother cuz Dre is the real deal, no smoking mirrors and lip synchers over here.

Aftermathmusic.com:
What type of feedback did you get from people about your work with Aftermath?

Che Vicious
Positive but i'm very low key most people don't know that I work with Aftermath.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Whats the difference between you, Dre or the others production-wise?

Che Vicious
I'm probably a lil more loose, Dre's production is crispy and theres a perfection he strives for, I'm trying to get there but in general i'm a lil more loose its all about vibe for me. Plus i don't really have a style or a sound (maybe I should all the famous producer seem to).

Aftermathmusic.com:
A lot of artists and producers saying Dre is a "clean-up man". Is the work with him really that demanding?

Che Vicious
I don't call shit I love to do demanding. I love it so its fun!

Aftermathmusic.com:
The Aftermath artists - Your thoughts on Eve, Busta, Eminem, Stat Quo, Bishop Lamont, Joell Ortiz, Tiffany Villarreal, Marsha and 50 Cent?

Che Vicious
We got some great people- Stat is my man, me and Batson did his single grits, we shot one of his street videos at batson's house. He's like family to me, Busta is one of my closet friends, we talk almost every week and we're both Taurus so we just click. Joell Ortiz is the truth, he inspires me, he is hip hop, he's so hungry, so pure. Marsha is my sister, I met marsha in a studio in london long before floetry or her even moving to the US, I have only met a few people in my life with that kind of supernatural ability. Bishop Lamont is another great person outside of his great talent, he is real good people!!!!! so to answer your question I love the artist and the talent ..math. Oh yeah and Tiffany is a sweetheart and her album is crazy.

Aftermathmusic.com:
The Aftermath releases in 2008 are ...?

Che Vicious
That's the question.

Aftermathmusic.com:
On which album can we find Che Vicious productions?

Che Vicious
Che is a behind the scenes guy, the assist man you know Scottie Pippen. I'm there if you look but I don't broadcast that stuff just know that i was there.

Aftermathmusic.com:
What do you think every good album needs?

Che Vicious
A hit!

Aftermathmusic.com:
Which albums would you have liked to be part of after not appearing on them?

Che Vicious
I don't care about that kind of stuff, if it was meant to be it will.

Aftermathmusic.com:
You currently working on projects for several artists. Tell us more please.

Che Vicious
Detox, Eminem, Joell, Marsh and a couple of my own artists,( Pt the general, Ocean, and Tray Gutta and Sonny Black and Masia One.) these singers Holly Palmer and Beverly Knight and a couple of other things that I don't want to discuss.

Aftermathmusic.com:
What have you learned from the music industry at the time on the math?

Che Vicious
I've learned a lot not only music but about life from Dre but from the industry well i've been in it since I was 23 and now i'm 37 and its always changing so you have to keep evolving with it or become obsolete.

Aftermathmusic.com:
The fans wanted that you speak on "Detox".

Che Vicious
Nope!

Aftermathmusic.com:
So what can we expect from the sound of “Detox”

Che Vicious
Banging!

Aftermathmusic.com:
What is your role on this album?

Che Vicious
Contributor! Whereever I can contribute.

Aftermathmusic.com:
How would you describe the chemistry in the studio with Dre, Dawaun or Focus?

Che Vicious
I've never worked with Focus but I think he's dope. As far as the other guys we get along good. I brought Dawaun in so I like to see him do well. But its a fun atmosphere we enjoy what we do.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Tell us about a typical recording session for in the studio.

Che Vicious
I know people are curious about this kind of stuff because if I wasn't there I would be curious myself but I don't speak on that stuff.

Aftermathmusic.com:
What can you tell u about the new Eminem album. Dre said, that he's back working on an album.

Che Vicious
He is addressing a lot of what needs to be said about the state of hip hop. I love dude and we just kick some times about hip hop, old shit new shit. I like his shit alot.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Okay, thanks for all that input man! What are some of the goals you hope to conquer in your career?

Che Vicious
To make good shit and put my munchins through college

Aftermathmusic.com:
What is your top 3 list of best lyricists out right now?

Che Vicious
3 ain't enough because i'm still a fan but here is a list not in any particular order: Nas, Jay Z, Em, Joell Ortiz, Raekown, Qtip, Busta, Common, Dre 3000 and Big Boi!

Aftermathmusic.com:
A lot of labels changing their marketing startegies, I mean it's like 'How can we promote this artist without spendin money'. What do you think is the best way?

Che Vicious
Because of the internet there are a lot of ways, I don't know that there is a best way but I think you have to be more creative in the way you introduce an artist and I do think that theres is a lot of opportunity for the independant artists these days.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Let me ask you this, what do you think of the music industry today, compared to 10-20 years ago?

Che Vicious
10- 20 years ago there was just more creativity and quality in music and we need some of that back. There were classic albums and timeless artists we don't have as much of that as we need. We need more visionary record executives that are willing to take chances and sign talent (sometimes artists of the beat and path).

Aftermathmusic.com:
What's the most often asked question you guys get hit with, that you hate to get hit with?

Che Vicious
What do i work on and whats Dre like?

Aftermathmusic.com:
What is the highlight in your carreer till now?

Che Vicious
When Lauren Hill performed the song Zion (that I did) on the grammys right before she won album of the year (which I got a grammy for)

Aftermathmusic.com:
What would you tell a new producer, that is coming up right now. What would you tell him ... like the most important thing to look out for.

Che Vicious
Learn instruments, learn as much about the business of music as you can, get a good lawyer and manager (when the time is right) and learn the art of networking! Also learn the art of publicity

Aftermathmusic.com:
What do you want to say to everybody reading this interview?

Che Vicious
Look out for Detox and support good music! Support real hip hop! Support real talent! And for your info here's some of my history I know I kind of avoided that question earlier but heads need to know.

I did Ghetto Superstar (Pras, Mya & ODB), No,No,No (Remix) Destiny Child, Gone til november (Remix) Wyclef & R. Kelly, A rose is a still rose (Aretha Franklin), most of Lauryn Hillls "MisEducation" Album, Joint on Whitney Houston and Santana, Joints on 50 Cent, Eminem, Young Buck, The Game, Jay-Z, Nas, Mos Def, Busta Rhymes, Stat Quo and a bunch of other shit.
