The difference btw US/UK is due to markets. Over here in the UK, more money can be earned by record labels by promoting singles, usually pop. they expect big opening weeks then the singles disappear.
whereas in the US labels spend more time promoting albums, for long term sales. I dont know how the singles 'charts' are formed over there. im assuming it radio play.
labels in the US havent traditionally earned much from singles, thats why they cost too much. they'd rather you buy the album

...And if we do find singles they are most likely imported, (and very expensive).

The only time I remember singles selling a lot was when muthaphukkaz was broke. Back when tapes were like 7.99 and CDs were like 12.99, single were just on tape for like 2.99 at the Wherehouse. Then slowly that shit started picking up, and sky rocketed when Blockbuster bought their ass. But back in them days, I owned all kinds of singles, hell $3, you damn right I owned the Dre Day single, and basically any other song I liked, but heard that their albums were shitty. Now though, it seems since most people have money, then singles are rearer.
Damn Bill Clinton, fixing the economy, I can't wait until George Bush fucks shit up like his dad. J/K, though Bush is going to fuck something up to make us broke again.

I think the record labels have been promoting the albums more then singles. It doesn't make since to waste money to put out singles when you can promote the album more. Back in 98 Master P could sell albums without putting out a video, single etc, just by promoting and letting people know when the album was coming out.

Bottom line is singles do not make the label any money, selling albums does. That's why you rarely see any singles being released these days. I think the last Snoop single I've seen in stores was Woof.

We mostly get singles as Imports for like 12.99...Shit, I aint payin that much for a single...Most of the singles like the ones with videos and shit are imports...We never get any Singles by Dre, Emine, DPG, Kurupt, Snoop for a reasonable price, because they are all imports...Shit sux..
Oh yea, and I doubt releasing it on tape would help a lot since your sister would've been the only one buying it...

It's not pointless...They have Videos, Insturmentals, Remixes, and Acapellas, that aren't available on the whole LP...

Jay-
There were only 3 singles released off of "2001".
It was rumored a while back that "The Watcher Remix" would become a single w/ Rakim & Hittman.
Don't know what happened there.
