when they say that the role was re-cast and re-written its not in our realm, its in the movie's universe.

the film is about the making of a Vietnam film.  In the film they are making a film and part of the controversy is this role was written for a black man but given to Robert Downy Jr.'s CHARACTER.  His character is such a devoted method actor that he takes the role as is and decides to undergo "negroplasty".
