I think the MVP is gonna come down to Kobe and Chris Paul
« on: March 17, 2008, 07:00:00 PM »
At the start of the season the candidates (in order if I recall correctly) were: Garnett, D.Howard, Lebron, Kobe, CP3. Obviously early season predictions are based on the first few games and unfortunately personal opinions (hints Kobe being 4th).

Now that we're 60+ games in we can really see who's a legit candidate and who's now. So here's how I see it...

5. Dwight Howard
He got early MVP consideration because of how well the Magic played on the road. They're still a good team and he's having another great season but I just don't think he's worthy of MVP honors just yet.

4. Lebron James
So he should get the MVP because he's a superstar putting up great numbers and carrying a weak team to the playoffs? I just described 2006 Kobe. If he couldn't win it for carrying that weak ass team to the playoffs in the West with that legendary season then no one can Lebron be in the conversation. 8 games over .500 in the East is NOT worthy.

3. Kevin Garnett
Yes his team has the best record in the league. But here's what you have to keep in mind: 3 guys from the Celtics made the All-Star team this year, they went 7-2 without him (then lost the next 3 when he came back), and they have seasoned veterans like James Posey, PJ Brown, and Sam Cassell on their bench. Take any 1 of their big 3 off the team and you still have an elite team (especially in the east).

Teams 1-8 in the East are separated by 24.5 games. Teams 1-9 in the West are separated by 6 games! That pretty much means that the MVP HAS to come from the West.

2. Chris Paul
This guy is simply amazing. 20 points, 10 assists, and 2 steals a game while leading a team that really no one expected to make the playoffs to the top of the West (in the toughest division) is definitely MVP worthy. Only reason I say he shouldn't win it is because...

1. Kobe Bryant
We've seen him somehow manage to improve on his game EVERY single season. He's been the best in the league since Jordan walked out of Utah holding up his 6th championship trophy. We've seen him do things that haven't been done since Chamberlain was around. This year he's back and he added the final missing ingredient to his repertoire: maturity. He's a better leader, a better teammate, he's trusting his bench guys down the clutch, and he's playing beautiful team ball. Unfortunately his teammates can't stay healthy but he's been penalized enough for his teammates faults. This has to be his year.

Agree? Disagree? Post your list.

If Kobe doesn't get it this year, that means he'll never get it...the people who vote on the award simply don't like the guy. I mean, how many articles have you read tryna discredit Kobe? These same guys writing that shit are the punks voting for MVP. I don't see how you can vote for a guy you don't wanna see succeeding? I'm gunna go out on a limb and say that Kobe probably isn't getting it... :-\

Paul needs to pay his dues... if he's this dope another season, then he should be a top choice.

I feel you but I have a strange feeling things might change this year. Hell if he's already got Charles Barkley and Jon Barry on his nuts, that right there is an accomplishment in itself.

I can not agree with that statement.  Atleast until KG has a ring (or Duncan breaks his spine)

KG is a better player...Duncan is great, even if he is past his prime.. but KG would have just as many rings (if not more) in his shoes.

first order of business

fuck both duncan and garnett, but Duncan>>>Garnett. timmy might be past his prime and garnett maybe still playing in his, BUT. i'd choose an over the hill duncan (as of right now) than garnett. Garnett needs other players (sam cassell, spree, allen, peirce) to be successful, where as timmy is the one who's makin' his players the de facto every year.

and yes i'd have to agree that i think it's going to come down to kobe and Paul. ultimately cuz i don't think the rockets will hold on to that top seed for much longe( as a matter of fact looking at the standing right now the lakers SHOULD be the top seed now cuz of the division record/confr record , ect) . and 1 and 2 will be the lakers and new orleans by the time the season ends. and IMO i think the MVP should go to the leader of the team that gets that top spot.

You make no sense...Duncan needs other players (David Robinson, Sean Elliot, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobli) as well...LOL. EVERY star needs a strong supporting cast to do some damage.

well i'll try to make more sense.

Garnett needs OTHER leaders. every successful player needs a supporting cast , a strong one at that. i'm not denying that. but notice that the only winning teams garnett has been apart of is where he was with a stronger leader(s), as mentioned above. whereas timmy was the H.N.I.C, even in the Robinson era. put garnett on the spurs and timmy on the wolves a couple of years ago and i don't see san antonio doing what they've done.

Kobe will get it. It seems like you have to get screwed out of at least 1 before you actually win it.

Yes, pretty much. Nash was an exception because he completely  turned the Suns around after his FA signing.
At the end of the day, there is no chance that Kobe will retire without an MVP trophy. Even if he is having a lesser season at like 32, they will give it to him just for what he has done in his career. I'm sure as fuck about that. That nigga Paul has plenty of chances to get one or two throughout his career, he's still a young cat, as is the great LeBron.
