Manu Ginóbili wins NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award
« on: April 21, 2008, 11:31:57 AM »
NEW YORK -- San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili won the NBA's Sixth Man Award, given to the best player in a reserve role, on Monday.

The 30-year-old Argentine received 615 out of a possible 620 points, including 123 of 124 first-place votes, from a panel of journalists.

A sixth man in 51 out of 74 games played this season, Ginobili led the Spurs in scoring with a career-high average of 19.5 points.

The six-year NBA veteran also averaged 4.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.47 steals.

Phoenix Suns guard Leandro Barbosa finished a distant second on 283 points followed by Jason Terry of the Dallas Mavericks with 44.

Players had to have come off the bench in more games than they started to be eligible for the award.

I really think they should give this award to players that don't play "starter" minutes.

To tell you the truth all those awards are kinda "strange". They're giving the "6th man award" to a player who averages 31-32 minutes.
They gave the MVP award to players who were clearly not the best players in the league.
They give the defensive player of the year to Centers, ignoring guards and playmakers.
They give the "most improved" award to players who just doubled the minutage..

Who knows.. Anyway.. Manu is a great player and, if those are the standards/rules, he deserved it.

The 6th man of the year award has ALWAYS gone to the first guy off the bench...throughout the history of the award, that player has ALWAYS played starter minutes and was usually the 2nd or 3rd option on his team. I don't get why this confuses anyone?

I mean i don't see why give this award to Ginobili. Don't take it personal, Manu played in Italy and he's the man, but i mean he ain't no 2nd unit. He's the guys who made 2 assists and 1 basket in the 3 clutch shots SAS took in Game-1. He's the go-to-guy of the team. He's no role player. He plays the clutch minutes, he averages 32 mins per game, etc.. He just starts from the bench, but that doesn't make him a 2nd unit type of guy, so i don't see why give this award to a player who really doesn't have less minutage than the other 2 starts of the team. Anyway.. those are the rules, those are the standards.. so congrats Manu. He deserved it.

1-the qualification is not being a starter, so i see no shame in Manu winning

2-MVP = "Most Valuable", not "the most talented".

I know, i know..

I just disagree with those awards. I mean i'd rather have those two awards:

1- 6th man award given to players with less than 20 minutes per game not being starters
2- best player in the league of the year.

But it's just me.

Manu deserved it, by NBA actual standards. No doubt.

yeah but think about it

player A is the most physically talented guy on the court every game he plays, but makes mental errors that can cost a game and doesn't make his team mates better.

player B is clearly less athletic but has a higher basketball IQ and makes less flashy plays that helps his team win

player B should win the award, player A should get the sportscenter highlights

Crack, calm down for a sec...the best player in the NBA is typically perfect combination of basketball IQ and overall talent. It's not either "have great athleticism" or "have a high basketball IQ" like your crackhead ass was making it seem.

some guys rely on athleticism and some guys can't

how you think McGrady's IQ compares to the nigga Kobe?

they can both dominate a game but one of them knows how to not make mental errors in playoff games
