Response to Conan's Blog about West Coast negativity
« on: May 02, 2008, 11:33:35 AM »
I won't be arrogant enough to assume that Conan's blog was in part inspired about my comment about 1/3 of Western Union, so I will give my take on his comments in said blog.

A week and some change ago, I basically gave a negative review of Damani as far as his skills. It was my opinion that he was wack. I recieved a lot of tuff talk and resistance from other members of the forum. I also wrote a diss track towards dude and said he sucked on a youtube video I happened to run across. After careful consideration, I was about to retract my statements and apologize until I read Conan's blog. He had some points I agreed with and some I didn't and I really had to question his motivation for writing it considered that he pretty much prefaced it with the review about Western Union.

Now, I did agree with Conan as far as his take on the nature of Western Union's music, I do agree that it is for the most part a departure from the gang-oriented music that normally comes off the West Coast, from the music I have heard, no disrespect, but I'm not really into them as a group (I do think Lucc is an exceptional emcee, despite our somewhat hostile exchanges in the forum).

With that said, I strongly object to Conan's notions about negativity and the rifts between artists on the West Coast. He spoke about this 'competitive' nature. I'd just like to say that everybody doesn't agree with the direction that our music is taking. Am I really wrong if I go on a forum (that is presumably supposed to be an outlet for positive and negative feedback) and say that I think such and such is wack. As harsh of a comment as it may seem, it is an honest opinion not based on any personal hatred for a particular artist. I personally think that a majority of west coast music is mindless and repetitive. I also feel like a lot of the artist sound the same and do the exact same topics. Sometimes DUBCNN pushes artist that I just don't feel (and there are a lot on here that I just think are terrible).

As far as the competitive nature and the beefs...well, beefs have always been in hip-hop and there is absolutely nothing wrong with competitiveness...nothing at all. What do you think Fight klub is about, the Pit and other places where emcees battle? I think it's totally fine to battle on wax as well as long as the participants can keep it off the street and there is no bloodshed. Therefore, I don't feel bad about dissing Damani on a track because he can either respond or not. And if he does respond, it can become a battle of wits (but you know how it goes, some people are too 'big' to accept a challenge and blah, blah , blah). While I don't think he's all that good a rapper, I still sincerely wish him well and hope he stacks his cheese accordingly, no bullshit. So no, I ain't apologizing or retracting no statements, Ultimately they are just one man's opinion. Furthermore, from what I can deduce he has a grip of cats who feel his music.

So in effect, I sort of took offense to Conan's blog due to the fact that because he gave a positive review of the mixtape, everybody is just supposed to fall in line with his opinion. And any opinions that are contrary to his indicate negativity. Because everbody ain't diggin the direction of West Coast hip-hop, then we got some huge problem here on the west coast. I think the problem is that there are a lot of West Coast artist going out of their way to make West Coast music, instead of just making good music. I personally feel misrepresented by a majority of the artists out here. With that said, I can't knock someboy else if they feel otherwise (which a lot of ya'll do).

If Snoop or Western Union is paying ya'll to pump em, or if ya'll just pumping because ya'll dig their movement, that's cool. And I do actually apologize and retract my one statement regarding DUBCNN wasting page space with WU when they could be pumping better artist (yes, i was out of line for that). Shit, get ya'll money mayne and as much pub as ya'll can, I can't hate or be mad at ya'll for that, it's good marketing. I'm never to big to admit when I'm wrong and despite what anybody thinks, I never been a hater.

Well put. And this coming from me, a Damani fan, I can see where you are coming from on alot of stuff. At the end of the day you agree to disagree. I can't change your views on Damani and vice versa.
