Well i'd just directly quote what i read but some muthaphuckas on this form might not understand it, so i'll try explain it in a simplier way:

Your tongue is constantly supported 24/7 by a muscle (In a way you can call your tongue a muscle altogether).

When people pass out/lose conciousness through drinking, this is the most vunerable time for them as their body relaxes a majority of muscles, including ones that aren't meant to be even during sleep. So when people pass out on their back, a certain muscle that holds the tongue in position rests too and traps your airway/throat, now imagine that person tries to throw up.

They're fucked.

That's why the first aid position places people on their side, to try keep their airway open and prevent chocking on vomit or other foreign objects that may enter/exit their airway.
