These late hours are meant to keep kids busy with extracurricular activities like kickball so they don’t get bored and start doing bad things. They even have hip hop classes and DJ lessons! The question has finally been answered: Kids join gangs because the parks close too early.


In a bid to prevent a summertime spike in gang violence, police and other officials unveiled a plan Monday to keep several city parks open late into the night.

The idea is to keep youngsters off the streets and engaged in sporting and other activities supervised by volunteers and intervention workers at eight parks in some of the city's most gang-saturated neighborhoods.

Summer in the city traditionally sees an increase in gang crime, as longer evenings spawn boredom.

The program, dubbed Summer Night Lights, will see the parks kept open until midnight Wednesdays through Saturdays starting July 4 through Labor Day.

"It's an effort on our part to give kids alternatives to the violence that you see in our cities," Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said at a news conference at a recreation center in Glassell Park.

The Glassell Park neighborhood northeast of downtown was the scene of a raid last week in which hundreds of law enforcement officials arrested dozens of people named in a federal racketeering indictment aimed at a gang that has been entrenched in the area for decades.

The anti-gang initiative will also comprise athletic leagues, hip-hop classes, boxing, DJ lessons and other programs including some aimed at involving parents, program manager Alicia Kavalos said.

Detrail Young, 19, a volunteer football instructor in the new program, said he had come under some pressure to join a gang when he was growing up but avoided it by focusing on school and sports.

"I was just straight on in school and playing football," he said. "I can be a role model."

The $1 million initiative is funded by private donations.

According to the Los Angeles Unified School District, nearly 25,000 more students will be out of school during the summer months after several middle and high schools transferred to a traditional school calendar this year.
