E-40 got too involved with that hyphy stuff, which is why it's hard for me to really listen to his albums now.
The whole "Hyphy" thing was good for bringing in exposure, but it kind of limited what kind of Bay artists could get their shine. Ya Boy and Clyde Carson didn't really get to cash in on the attention that E-40 and Mistah FAB and the Pack got. There is a lot of garbage that got put out also, the Thizz Ent. label doesn't do a great job at making good albums and they let on too many weak features. Overall though, you have a wide range, from the club/dance tracks, the gangsta rappers, the more lyrical, and the hip-hop culture that has been going since Hieroglyphics put them on the map. There's a lot of good music coming out of the Bay, you can't just listen to an E-40 album and think that you have heard it all.
Give me some lyrical rappers, I only listen to some Too Short & Spice 1.
