Matt Barnes to sign with Phoenix Suns
« on: July 21, 2008, 03:33:48 PM »
The Phoenix Suns apparently dipped into the talent pool in their own division this weekend.

Multiple media reports on Sunday said that free-agent forward Matt Barnes, who played for the Golden State Warriors last season, will take a physical on Monday in Phoenix before signing a one-year deal with the Suns.

"He's the perfect player for us, an athletic guy who runs the floor, finishes at the basket and can shoot the outside shot," Suns general manager Steve Kerr said, according to the East Valley Tribune. "He's also a guy who has had big games in the playoffs for Golden State and likes the big stage."

The 27-year-old Barnes has played for five teams in a five-year career. His best season came in 2006-07 when he averaged 9.8 points and 4.6 rebounds for a Warriors team that upset the top-seeded Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the playoffs.

Last season, Barnes' numbers fell off to 6.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per game, close to his career averages of 6.1 points and 3.8 rebounds.

Barnes will make the veteran minimum -- $1.2 million -- next season.

It was pretty much determined the Warriors weren't bringing him back, he could get some minutes with the Suns, they aren't too crowded on the wing.
I got a bird's eye view

Personally, I woulda preferred him to James Posey, who got a much bigger contract.

We need a DEFENSIVE SF.
Barnes is cool, but he's not exactly the type of guy we need having already Walton and Radmanovic in the roster.

Yeah wtf. If anything Barnes is just a slight upgrade over Ariza (minus the explosiveness).

^How is Barnes an upgrade over Ariza? LOL! Plus, Barnes is a very good defender. That's one of his main strengths. Have you guys even watched the guy play?

We don't need a defesnive SF cutting away from Ariza's minutes. He IS our defensive SF.

Barnes = tough, scrappy, hustle player

Posey = defensive stopper

There's a difference.

Posey is more of a tough, scrappy player than a defensive stopper, as well. I'd take Ariza's D over Posey's.

And how would you know? You've never even seen Ariza play. LOL. Ariza is a top tier defender at the 3. He's got tremendous length, great reading ability to get in the passing lanes, and excellent man up D. Lemme ask you something... Where do you get off on hating the Lakers?

LA should have put Ariza on Pierce in the finals, maybe the end result would have been different :/

Your basketball knowledge is very, VERY limitted...if you can't see that Posey's main strength is his hustle, then you're clearly clueless. Don't discuss with me.
