Author Topic: Why so many rappers stop promoting their albums after a couple months?  (Read 600 times)

I always wonder why so many rap dudes stop promoting their albums after a couple months. Take Snoop Dogg and Chamillionaire for example. Before "Ego Trippin" released, Snoop was supporting the hell out of the album (he went to a lot of talkshows, even visits non hip-hop based shows, has his own TV show, with "Sexual Eruption" the perfect first single IMO) but after the album drops and just sold 137,000 copies  in itīs first week (a clearly flop for Snoop) he didnīt much more. He just released "Lif Of Da Party" as second single, a bad choice IMO, and then constantly stopped supporting the album, drops no more singles and so on. OK, he did the West-Fest tour, but this was just for the hardcore-westcoast audience which already knew about the album and probably bought the record before the tour. Now look at Cham. He also just sold 130,000 copies in its first week with his first LP "The Sound Of Revenge" but he doesnīt stopped promoting it nationwide and then dropped with "Ridinī" the perfect single. The total sales of "The Sound Of Revenge" are 1.5 million copies, while Snoop hangs on 350,000 units after a half year. With the right singles and further promoting he easaly could hit 700k, maybe go plat in the third quarter. Instead heīs now talking about a new album and probably is already working on it. I could continue this list with other rappers doing the same.

Artists from other genres (pop, rock, rnb) ainīt doing shit like this, so why there are so many rap dudes who unequal to promote their albums decent?

That's a good question.

It's probably also has something to do with the labels. If they don't see the good results in the first 2,3 weeks they scrap the project.

That is exactly why - after all that pre promo if it doesnt do well why are they to think that it will start to pick up. Weeks 1-3 are CRUCIAL. Sometimes you just have to face facts that if you make mistakes with singles/video/promo then that album isnt gonna hit. If its your first album expect to get dropped quickly - if your established then write it off and move on...

Yeah, I was thinking the same at first but then again you have to look to artists from other genres: Rihannaīs second album sold 115,000 copies in itīs first week, ended up with platinum, Keyshia Cole started with 281,000 sold copies after the first wee for her "Just like You"album and is now near 1,5 sold units, Nelly Furtadoīs "Loose" did 219,000 unitīs the first week and also ended up double platinum...

I mean are the labels really that dumb that they think that when a album sold not so good the first weeks it canīt get a sale boost whit the right promotion and right singles? Isnīt it even more expenisve to produce a whole new album after an half year than put a bit more money in good promotion for the current record?

That's definetly a good point, I remember Akon and Fergie also doing only around 200.000-300.000 first week in 06 and they're both like 4x plat now. Don't know why it's different for rnb...

Its called "money". and it runs out.

they only spend a certain amount of money, and time, on each record.

flogging a dead horse is not very good 4 business.

+ they may be only doing certain types of promotion and not adds (cutting back) like at live shows.

its because rappers exceed the budget...once the budget is spent and results arent seen the label kind of washes its hands of the record...at that point its up to the artist to figure out ways to push the album on his own...

this promo can be

internet hustlin

shoot a real basic video out of your pocket

use a street team

appearances and cross promotion

remixes (which ussually lead to a rereleased album which just further adds up to more money that must be re couped to the label.)

Ok, thatīs a really good point homie. +1

But what I still donīt understand is that even "big" rappers like Jay-Z (in this case the rapper also runs his label) gave up their promotion after a while (remember, before "American Gangster" dropped he says that he want to shoot short clips to all tracks on the record and all that kind of shit). And I donīt really think that is that much cheaper to drop another album after 1 - 1,5 year than spend some more money on promoting the current album for more than just 6 months or so.

Snoop did many things wrong with his album. He sayed he had ghostwriters , he had a first single were he was singing . His second single was a flop , he realeased a country song.. Cool but, hey is that snoop? ...

He should stop being to much out of his circle, He should what he is best at Hiphop, rap .

But anyway he have realeased a new single those curlz , he probally gonna realease "cant say goodbye"

Kid rock dropped out of the album billboard chart top 40 .. But he re entered the chart becourse off " all summer long" He is now number 5 on that chart.....

so everything can happen
