History written: Phelps wins No. 8

BEIJING -- A journey that started four years ago after his six-gold performance in Athens and included 17 swims over nine days here ended triumphantly for Michael Phelps on Sunday.

Phelps earned his unprecedented eighth Olympic gold medal of the 2008 Olympics as he swam the butterfly leg of the Americans' world-record win in the 4x100m medley relay to close out the swimming competition at the Water Cube.

Aaron Peirsol led off in the backstroke leg, Brendan Hansen swam the breast and Jason Lezak anchored in the free, the same three who won gold in Athens. Phelps swam the prelims of that race in Athens, giving up his finals spot to Ian Crocker.

Phelps tied Mark Spitz with his seventh gold medal a day earlier in the 100m butterfly, winning by the slimmest of margins, .01 of a second over Milorad Cavic.

His quest was almost derailed in Day 2 of the meet in the 4x100m free relay, but Lezak's unbelievable anchor leg kept the quest alive.

He's earned almost half of USA's gold medals. Amazing and pathetic.

Didn't deserve No. 7 though. That Serb was better. Maybe not technically faster, but definitely better.

Actually the serb would of won b/c the final stroke he timed it wrong and wasn't able to do a full stoke so he glided into the finish while Phelps timed it perfectly and had enough room for a final stroke.  So I don't know how the serb is better.

The point is not who is the overall better swimmer, as it is clearly your American hero; but in this race the Serb was simply better. I still don't fully comprehend how in the heck he lost it. Maybe he touched that shit earlier, but too soft, or something.

All this eight gold medals talk is kind of unfair, anyways. In most other sports you simply can NOT get 8 gold medals in one year, NO MATTER HOW GOOD YOU ARE. It is virtually impossible, and swimming is different in that regard. So to call him the best Olympian, let alone best athlete ever is quite disgraceful.
