Don Seer:
I'm guessing by 'Funny looking outlet' you mean a midi port.
I guess you'd have to record the live drum set on a mic.
And hook the keyboard up to some software.
RC:
what kind of software? i was going to do the drums live,,,,,and add an extra bass track with something else..would the 808 drum machine do? can i route the keyboard through the 808 or a mixer,,u r right about the 'funny' thing,,i really want to know what is most crucial right now..
thanks for all the replies.8)
Don Seer:
I don't have any experience with midi stuff more complicated than hooking the midi control keyboard i have up to my machine.
I'll tell ya what I know.
Midi stuff gets hooked up through the PC joystick port (normally found on a soundcard).
You will need and midi -> PC joystick converter for this. (my keyb came with one)
Midi instruments will let you choose a channel they get set to. (on my keyb it depends on which key I hold down a key when I power it on.)
For your drums I guess you would sample using a microphone - clean up the sample/s in something like sound forge or cool edit.
Using the keyboard and samples and some sequencing software like cubase/acid/fruity loops etc you will be able to lay out your track - software depends a lot on personal preferences.
I don't know about hooking an 808 or a mixer up - but I want to. If the midi device has and in and an out then you can route stuff though it.
(my keyb just has an output so it would have to be the first in the chain if i hooked something up in the middle.)

can i get any of those programs on the net,,any free ones?,,,,ex. sound forge,,acid.. I have seen some of these programs for sale in music equipment books..all i need is a good program and im ready.
Don Seer:
For eductional purposes only (heheh) you can get the latest Fruity Loops (v3) and some other stuff here.

Use the menu on the left and go Apps->Audio.
myself..
I've fucked about with samples a lot - i know that side of things well.
I've got a growing library of chopped up beats and basslines to play with.
I've just learnt the brand new version of fruity.
I just gotta practice making beats, they're getting better by the week.
