Manager Kevin Keegan has left Newcastle United after only eight months in charge, BBC Radio 5 Live understands.

Speculation had been mounting over the 57-year-old's unhappiness with a lack of control over transfer activity.

The club's only business on transfer deadline day was a £5.7m swoop for Spanish striker Xisco and the loan signing of midfielder Ignacio Gonzalez.

The former England boss rejoined the Magpies in January, having managed at St James' Park between 1992 and 1997.

Newcastle are 11th in the Premier League having picked up just four points from their opening three games.

as a newcastle fan i just cant belive it. what a laughing stock our club has become. Part of me cant blame kevin keegan, i mean his not going to sit there and try to make newcastle an "elite" team without the resources he was promised. id heard the spurs rumours, i remember one match there was numerous clips of him standing up through out the game with nothing said. I stand up to go for a piss at united and there telling me to sit back down.

well the club has now issued a staement saying they have not sacked keegan. if you ask me theyve turned about face hear and upon seeing the fans reaction they have pleaded for keegan to stay. my gut feeling is ashley wanted and wants wise to be the manger at newcastle, i heave no idea why because the newcastle fans cant stand the bloke. also youve got to remember wise was hired 2 weeks after keegan was as director of football, keegan was not made aware of this upon his own hiring and it has been a big elephant in the room since.

on a sidenote how do you think berabatov is going to fit in at united? i think what united need is an out and out goalscorer, to me his just another playmaker in the mold of rooney and tevez.
