EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH KURUPT (DECEMBER ‘08)
Interview by Justin “Lunatic” Melo

CV.Com: Chronic Vacation is right here with Kurupt! How are you?

Kurupt: Right now I’m just rolling to go see my nigga Tyrese and talk some movie gigs! Then I’m going to go and see Snoopy (Snoop Dogg) and talk some music gigs, ya dig?

CV.Com: That’s the deal!

Kurupt: I got you man! Scodie (Roscoe) is actually on his way here right now from Vegas. He’ll be here in about forty-five minutes. He was out there working. I got him in this movie business now. He was just out there doing some shit because he’s doing movies as well. That’s why we unfortunately can’t have him right now too.

CV.Com: It’s all good! Big brother looking out for little brother, right?

Kurupt: Ain’t that what life is about?

CV.Com: Exactly! By now, everybody and their momma knows you and Roscoe are blood brothers. Tell us about some brotherly activities the two of you like to engage in away from creating music?

Kurupt: One thing that’s major is we were born on the same day. November 23rd, we are eleven years apart. I turn 36 and my brother turns 25, on the same day.

CV.Com: That’s big right there! Do the two of you throw one big birthday party?

Kurupt: My wife does it so big for my birthday; she does it big for me and Scodie. Every birthday, Christmas and Thanksgiving, me and my brother Scodie, we always do it together because we’re always out here in California. Being out here, we make sure we do the holidays and birthdays together. That’s one main thing about me and Scodie – it’s imperative.

CV.Com: That’s dope. You have to stay tight as blood. I mentioned creating music and the new duo album “The Frank & Jess Story” is in stores right now. The fans have been asking for this duo album for quite some time; what finally prompted the two of you to get in the studio and knock it out?

Kurupt: John Silva hollered at me and he was like “Kurupt, I want to do a joint with you,” and I said, “You know what? [I’ll] do this with my brother,” and he had the heaters for me. I loved his (Silva’s) stuff he did with Daz. They did an album called “Gangsta Party” which I loved. This got me and Scodie out of the shadow. I and Scodie had been talking about doing an album together for a long time. He (Silva) gave us the wheels to roll with.

CV.Com: It must have been fun recording a duo album with a blood brother. Do you have any memories you took away from the experience?

Kurupt: Definitely! I would be at the studio sleeping from being tired; I would just wake up and Scodie would be in booth laying something. That’s what woke me up because I would just hear something and be like, “Damn that shit’s banging!” and just wake up! He (Roscoe) always kept me on my toes like that. We never sleep when where in the studio. To do it with my brother, it was the best thing. It’s just like me and Daz though. Daz and Snoopy are like my brothers. It’s like waking up, jumping into the booth fresh off of a sleep and dropping some heat in the booth. It reminded me of the Death Row days. That’s how me, Snoopy, and Daz used to always do. That’s what we did out in Seattle with John Silva. We lived in the studio and we had a great time.

CV.Com: It sounds like you’re happy with how the project turned out. What do you want the fans to take away from it?

Kurupt: I want them to see the growth. It’s not just a bunch of records that don’t mean anything. We touched on some good stuff like “All I Need” and the value of friendship and family. Me, Daz and Scodie are on that joint right there. The record I did with Rob Quest, Scodie and Kokane was big. “Why They Hate On Me” with Scodie and Kokane was another record. It’s a great thing to do a collaborative effort with my and my brother but the people we collaborated with are just like family and we all had a great time. It’s really West West! Come and join this West Coast experience with me and Scodie!

The whole concept behind this is, we are the James gang; Frank and Jesse James – that’s me and Scodie. I’m a big Frank fan. I’m the older brother; I got the wisdom and the knowledge and the power. Scodie is more Jesse James; he’s wild and acts a fool. He’ll shoot before he thinks; there ain’t nothing wrong with that but together we make a medium. That’s the whole concept behind our gig. It’s all about having fun and enjoying life. A lot of times I make a record because I have to do it and this time I made a record because I was having the time of my life.

CV.Com: That’s very important. I like the meaning behind the title and all that. Is this it? You and Scodie gave the fans the album they wanted. Will the two of you ever do another duo project?

Kurupt: We have another one coming that we’re going to be doing, way in the future. Lately I’ve been making albums that I’m enjoying to make and not just making it because I have to. I and DJ Quik are doing a project which will be dropping [at] the top of the year. It’s stupendous! Out of this world. It’s just a real banging and real grown album. This is what I call “total grown folks music” - myself and DJ Quik. We also got Tha Dogg Pound album that is going to be dropping. “Street Lights” is coming in the summer; that’s my solo album that I’m dropping produced by Terrace Martin, who is an avid producer for everything Doggystyle.

There are a lot of good things coming for my company Pentagon Entertainment. Also, this is my first label deal. Well, actually [it’s my] second because I had Antra, but this is the first which I own independently, myself. I have the Pentagon deal with Fontana/Universal. They’ll be releasing all the Kurupt records that I’m going to be dropping as far as with my groups. [We’re also dropping] Red Bone, which is my wife’s group with her and her sister, Gail Gotti’s solo album, as well and the Roscoe solo album. These are all future projects of course, after next year. This is coming real fast and we’re hitting real heavy.

CV.Com: You got about a million projects going on right now. First up is the DJ Quik duo album in early ’09, correct?

Kurupt: First up is me and Roscoe’s album “Frank and Jess” because it’s in stores right now. Second up, the next project to come is definitely me and DJ Quik which is a DJ Quik and Kurupt album. That’s what people need to be looking out for. Next up after that is definitely going to be “Street Lights” which is my solo album produced by Terrace Martin. The first single is going to be with Pete Rock. This is my future outlet of all the records that I’m going to be dropping. Look out for Kurupt to hit the road real soon with Snoop doing it super big. Chuuch!

CV.Com: Is it true that Rakim is going to appear on the first single for the Kurupt and DJ Quik duo album?

Kurupt: We reached out to Rakim and we reached out to Raekwon. We’re putting that in effect right now. You can best believe you’re going to be seeing some future shit with myself, DJ Quik, Raekwon, and something with Rakim as well. It’s in the move right now, nephew!

CV.Com: That’s huge right there. You also mentioned that “Street Lights” will be dropping in the summer. What about the “100 Wayz” album with Daz?

Kurupt: We’re working on that now. Actually we were talking about dropping that first of the year as well - but then [we] took it across to Snoopy, as we do everything, and Snoop thought it was best for us to get to the album mixed and mastered first. Right now, he has some things on the table for us. We’re really sitting back, waiting for Snoopy to call the shots on what he wants to do with it. In the meantime, we’re mastering it right now. Snoopy is going to be pushing the line for the “100 Wayz” with me and Daz, as it’s supposed to be. It’s still up in the air right now on where we’re going to go with it.

CV.Com: OK, thanks for that. Back to the “Frank & Jess” album, what were the advantages of having one producer, in this case John Silva, do an entire album?

Kurupt: The advantage of it is you have one sound and basically everything is organized perfectly to a tee which means the concepts, everything with the sound – when it works, it works. It’s not just a bunch of different sounds going off. John Silva really concentrated on it and put his foot into it. You don’t get that a lot from producers. With John Silva, we all had one common goal and we’re trying to push a certain kind of line and make a certain kind of name for ourselves as far as me independently dropping records, as far as Scodie getting his name back up in the game and pushing hard and as far as John as a producer.

CV.Com: What’s your personal favorite song off of the album?

Kurupt: My personal favorite song on the album is a song called “Lap Dance.” We had a ball with that one.

CV.Com: Ok, no doubt. I know you can’t speak for Roscoe personally, but what’s up with the rumor going around about him possibly joining Konvict Music?

Kurupt: That’s Scodie’s squad over there with Detail. We fucks with Akon heavily. Scodie is over there with Detail a lot. He’s pushing Konvict Music 100%. I think that’s self-explanatory because we all do that; Snoopy is pushing with Akon, I’m pushing Konvict Music 100% and Scodie is over there with Konvict Music 100%. I’m trying to get him based somewhere with people that are professional like Konvict Music but also have that heat that they got. Akon and them ain’t playing any games; T-Pain, Detail – none of them is playing games. They’re trump tight with their business and the music is off the charts. I don’t think that’s too much of a rumor; he’s doing his thug-thizzle with Konvict Music.

CV.Com: The rumor is more about his next solo album coming through Konvict Music…

Kurupt: We are pushing that line. Scodie would be the best to push that there. I have a solo album that I want to be releasing with Roscoe as well. He has his own company that he’s pushing with. The record that I plan on pushing with him will definitely be something overseen by Detail. We’re trying to put something together where we can connect with Konvict Music and push this line for releasing Scodie’s next gig.

CV.Com: And that will come out sometime next year?

Kurupt: Definitely. We’re looking at a next year release date and we are talking with Konvict about it. It’s all Scodie’s shot calling.

CV.Com: You’re here with Chronic Vacation and we like to have some fun over here. We want to learn some game from Kurupt. We know you’ve settled down and are married, but what would you do when a girl starts catching an attitude? How do you keep her in check?

Kurupt: I say “Bitch, beat it! Get the fuck out! Quit talking that shit,” and she says “Ahhh! (frightened) I was just saying,” and that’s when you say, “Shut up bitch! (Laughs) Before I shove my foot so far up your ass you’ll be brushing my shoe bitch when you think about your teeth!” (Laughs).

CV.Com: (Laughs) We like that right there. What is Kurupt puffing on for the holiday season?

Kurupt: It’s called Kush, bitch!

Cv.Com: (Laughs). We shouldn’t have even asked! Do you have any last words for the fans on Chronic Vacation?

Kurupt: Hey, smoke on!

^it kind of happened quickly dog..

on the real, i appreciate everyone and anyone who ever wants to submit questions, but as an interviewer, i like to focus on the present and the future..don't really fuck with the past very much..the Death Row days are what they are in my opinion; old news..we as the west coast gotta get passed it, and i will not do my part to hold us back by bringing it up in every interview i do with former death row artists.

soz i was also meant to say was that i understand that if you've been told not to do it or his agent might say no deathrow questions then fine thats understandable for sure. but its been sometime now perhaps with every artsist out there that their past doesnt get talked about and i think that could make an interview abit intresting, but its not just about deathrow that u can talk abotu, talk about his 1st album, Tha Streetz Iz The Mutha leftover traks, how wer the sessions like, does he talk to tray dee, wat he thinks of the chronic 2001 sessions etc etc.

but do remember that im kl with what your doing. LUV U LUNATIC

^it's all good dog

i sometimes try and include some stuff about the past

kurupt is also a busy man and probably doesn't have time to discuss everything

with a new album in stores right now and 3 more coming in 2009, i think it was only fair to him to have those 4 projects dominate the interview.

Yessir... Roscoe been ready for that mainstream push for a while, it'd be nice to see someone like Scoe get big exposure. He's got that connection to the old west, but also represents the future.

Kurupt and Quik album will be fuckin insane. Can't wait!

But seriously, Roscoe needs to get a mainstream album out, with a mainstream label.

First single with T-Pain or Akon or something. As much as some people wouldn't want that, its what he needs.

You can look at his radio friendly tracks - 'I love Cali in the cummertime', 'Thats wussup', 'F*ck buddy', 'Smooth Sailin', 'Head to Toe' etc - they are all great tracks.

He needs to do less of the Armory Gang underground type of stuff, and get a little bit more mainstream.

Thats just my opinion though. When i spoke to him, i told him that Philiphornia would have gone gold at least had it been released and marketed properly.

He agreed, but just said his time will come. Hopefully this break with Konvict is it!
