What are the differences between Westcoast and Eastcoast Rap?
« on: December 10, 2008, 01:50:49 PM »
The only difference I see, is the Eastcoast beats are alot more boring.
And why do they say Game raps like an Eastcoast rapper?
Are there any Eastcoast rappers that sound Westcoast?

Well, Westcoast and Eastcoast rappers rap with different slangs, accents, delivery, beats and subjects. Just a little breakdown.

The typical west coast beat and the typical east coast beat does not sound the same.
Imo, both can be boring.

there are a few differences; such as...

but neither is always better than the other; depends on the artist.

At one time, there were huge differences. Westcoast was more laid back. with kind of a bounce to the beat, Eastcoast was raw and straight from the streets. The lyrics of the Westcoast was "gangsta", had a harder edge, well the Eastcoast had more word play and more complex rhyme schemes.

samples:
West:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/spgNMLG_j4g&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/spgNMLG_j4g&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1</a>

East:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/3yKDMrX8LlY&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/3yKDMrX8LlY&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1</a>

Now, I'm not sure, not much from either side in terms of new MC's. This is all I really have to go off of.

West:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/mCdNimBSdxs&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/mCdNimBSdxs&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1</a>

East:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/zYMg5qi4RlI&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/zYMg5qi4RlI&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1</a>

Despite being the most obvious examples of East and West, 50 and Game are actually the only NY and LA rappers to do something this year that aren't already legends from another era. Nas, Jay, Cube did their thing, but among the current rappers, only Game and 50 Cent represented with something commercial.

In the modern age, there isn't much difference. West Coast hip hop is just more influenced by gangsta rap. Like -BrazilAndWilmington- said, a lot of it is just slang and accents. Your content can also have a tendency to reflect where your from. Basically the local hip hop scene mostly differentiates different coasts/regions.

that was my point, I'm not sure exactly were we are now, but hey, since about 2000, when artist of both coast started working with each other, we kind of got this mixture.
