Exclusive Topic Interview
December 30, 2008 – 11:37 pm

Soprupradio.com:How was your childhood when you were growing up

Topic: My childhood was interesting when I was growing up, based on the fact that I seen a lot with having a step father and brother of a different culture. Also I grew up the younger years of my childhood in west Los Angeles and the elder years in West Covina Ca so that was a lot different in itself.

Soprupradio.com:How did you get into the rap game

Topic: I got into the rap game at the end of my eight grade year in middle school. It was what all the people I was around were doing and I always loved music I use to sing long before I was rhyming. It started to develop into a love relationship quickly as I was in ninth grade high school and from then on I was hooked on music.

Soprupradio.com:Whats your thoughts on the New West

Topic:My thoughts on the New West are positive. I think there are a lot of good artist in the New West and I think that we as a generation of new artist are taking more chances with the music and also making a much better lyrical effort in terms of creating our music. I do think that we have a long way to go as far as growing when it comes to new artist but over all we off to a good start. One thing that a lot of people and the public don’t know as far as being on the outside looking in is that it’s a lot harder to break being an artist from the New West, so the artist considered to be New West deserve a lot more credit then some of the artist before them.

Soprupradio.com:How come don’t some of the OGs help out the newer west coast artists

Topic:I wish I could answer this question, but I guess they just a lot of suckas as people regardless to how there music sounds.

Soprupradio.com:How do you feel about the current state of hip hop

Topic:I think the current state of hip hop is  garbage on an over all scale. I mean the music is not the primary focus as far as the consumer is concerned any more, with that being said  it  is my opinion that  a lot of these artist that are relevant  now are getting away with murder. Though I am not impressed with the current state of hip hop, I still love the game. I still love music, I still feel that there are plenty of people that respect there craft beyond fame or a dollar.

Soprupradio.com:Whats your thoughts on rappers trying to sing with the autotune

Topic:I don’t really have one, I feel like if I was a chef I wouldn’t be telling another cook how to or not to make there meals. I feel the same as a rap artist I can’t tell anyone how they should create there records. I can say it’s not the best sounding thing for a lot of the artist that have been trying it lately.

Soprupradio.com:Whats the process like when your making a song

Topic:My process is music driven, when I hear a beat as a artist I try and marry it. Unless we’re talking about a concept record or feature then I usually start with the beat being my sense of direction and say what the beat tells me to. You have to keep in mind that  I’m an artist that was raised under a different generation of music than is popular now so everything to me isn’t just a dance or gimmick the way a lot of the records sound today.

Soprupradio.com:Has DJ Quik contact you about doing some work with him because recently in couple interviews he mentioned how he wanted to work with you.

Topic:Yes he has, we spoke recently and I actually went to visit with him in the studio recently. We are at the talking stages at this point but you never know what a happen when two artist connect. I can say that I respect him as a G on the West Coast and I respect even more than that his musical ear.

Soprupradio.com:What new projects should we look forward to seeing soon from you

Topic:AMERICAN HUSTLER 2.0 “THE OVERLOOK” is first and foremost. I’m working on a lot of new music and I’m just waiting to get that break through single that sounds and feels right. We never make music with singles or agendas like that in mind, but when you get that type of record you will know. Look forward to visually seeing me a lot more in 09 my internet game is going to step up a lot.

Soprupradio.comAny last words or shoutouts

I like Topic. His single with Trey Songz was dope. Too bad it didn't get promoted because he had a hit in my opinion.
