LOS ANGELES (TICKER) —Former Los Angeles Clippers vice president Elgin Baylor is suing the organization, owner Donald Sterling and the NBA for age and race discrimination.

According to the Los Angeles Daily News, Baylor was advised not to speak publicly about the issue until Thursday, when he will hold a press conference to formally announce the lawsuit.

The Clippers released a statement Wednesday night by the team’s general counsel, Robert H. Platt.

“Not having seen the complaint, I cannot comment on Elgin’s specific allegations,” Platt said. “However, I can categorically state that the Clippers always treated Elgin fairly throughout his long tenure with the team. Prior to his decision to leave the team last October, Elgin never raised any claims of unfair treatment.

“It’s hard to believe that he would now make these ridiculous claims after the organization stood by him during 22 years and only three playoff appearances. It would be hard to find any sports team that has demonstrated greater loyalty to its general manager.”

Baylor is claiming that he was “discriminated against and unceremoniously released from his position with the team on account of his age and his race,” according to the Daily News. In addition to Sterling, team president Andy Roeser is also named in the suit.

Baylor served as the Clippers’ vice president of basketball operations for 22 years before being unceremoniously dumped this offseason. He claimed that he was severely underpaid by the organization, collecting only $350,000 per year.

According to the Los Angeles Times, he also pointed to an ongoing pattern of racial discrimination on the part of the organization, specifically when it came to contract negotiations. The Daily News also said that Baylor tried to reach a settlement with the team since being fired, but that no agreement could be made.

“Those talks proved unsuccessful, so we were left with no alternative but to file a lawsuit,” Baylor’s lawyer, Carl Douglas, told the newspaper. “Given my knowledge and understanding of the way that the Clipper organization operates, we were always hopeful we could resolve things informally but fully expected we’d be forced to file the lawsuit, as we did.”

Prior to his lengthy stint in the Clippers’ front office, Baylor was a Hall of Famer for the Minneapolis and Los Angeles Lakers, averaging 27.4 points over 14 seasons - fourth-best in NBA history.

I feel Baylor, he was GM for that club, and he drafted great talent, along with some shitty talent, but he put together some great teams just to see Sterling let them go and not pay the money to resign them. Baylor drafted Tyson Chandler, then traded him for Elton Brand, he got Darius Miles and Quentin Richardson, a duo I thought would lead the Clippers to the playoffs. Baylor traded that bust of a pick, Danny Ferry (I had his basketball card, which is the only reason I knew he existed... lol) for RON HARPER... and then had Ron Harper and Danny Manning together in their prime. All of this just so Sterling can find a way not to resigned them. I've said it before, Baylor was put into a position were he could not win, where he could not succeed. Hell they only lost a few years ago because of injuries, but then instead of keeping people, they let them all go. Now it's back to square one, and my man Baron Davis maybe back in LA but he needs to get that purple and gold on, 'cause that red white and blue look ain't flying in LA.

Lakers probably didn't want him.  Not everybody who was a great player within a franchise gets 2 be in the front office with the team they made great & sometimes its 4 the best.

i never understood the clippers' place in los angeles. i know a couple of years ago when they had brand, miles, and odom they were "kinda" a small deal. you'd see a couple of trendy black kids wear the jersey, but now the love in nonexistent unless you're a weirdo. i say they do move to anaheim or daygo, change their logo and maybe the name as well. get a fresh start like the old cleveland browns.
