Indeed, because 95 and 96, the West and East was competing for that top spot. After that, the East Coast took over for a little while and the West slacked off a bit while still being some what consistent. In the 2,000's shit was still on the East tip rap wise then around 03 - 04, the south really made it in a big way. So, yeah - the south is on top for a lot of trash, some decent dudes, catchy hooks, and in Bishop's words "Little Ass Kids". Lol.

First of all records used to sell because it was truly good music, and that goes for every genre of music.  Not because the media tells us what to buy.  And the fact you put so much emphasis on sales shows me you are a new hip hop b/c back int he day sales didn't dictate who was hot or not.  Nas was called the next Rakim and was all over NY after illmatic.  Yet the album didn't even go gold in the first year and it recently went platinum 3-4 years ago.  But it is regarded as one of the best rap albums of all time.  It shows you how pathetic rap is now, back in the day skills put you on top, not sales.

but whats good music is strictly opinion. we can't dictate that for everyone. that doesnt make me a "new" fan it just means i fully realize that. im a young cat but have a diversified taste; i like a lot of the new shit but my favs are nas, ice cube and scarface so clearly im more of an old school head. But when regions were most popular it was always the 1s that sold the most; when LA was on top u had Dre, Snoop, Cube, Pac etc all making good music yes, but it sold millions of records. thats just what the south is doing right now and its why on they're on top. and as dude said, its not like the east is putting a plethora of good material; all the good guys cant get albums out. when mims is the last "new" ny rapper that had a big hit, i'll gladly take my southern shit.
