Just had a thought....

Would the West be better off if producers went back to making 90s style beats? Yeah it sounds old in terms of years, but I mean just listening to some 90s albums and you can hear real street shit, real instruments (none of this Casio $100 keyboard sounding shit from the other coasts), and just bringing that old vibe back?

I just have this impression in my head that the 90s production (Johnny J, DJ Pooh, old school Daz, old school Quik) just sounds a whole lot more mature than the shit out now.

...or maybe im getting old lol.

it was a good sound, good sounds and musics are everlasting, but in hip hop/rap, bird minded people think the west's new beats are more "complex, superior, and evolved", not knowing you cant take a genre and completely change it and throw a new name on it and say its the same shit from the 90s, idiots......

I think both West & East need more 90's styles beats, even 80's....
Evrything now is just 75% baseline, 25% everything else. Music has no life to it at all now

Naw thats wrong. In the past the musician changes the sound of the music. It was a process till today. Now the industry say: "You beat must sound like Timbo or Lil John"! That's the problem! There is no creativity!

I agree.

But don't forget that even in the 90s it was the same to an extent. There were countless horrible-sounding 'g-funk' records, for example, from producers who didn't have a tenth of the talent of Dre, Daz or Quik, but who just thought 'I have to make a record that sounds like that!'

As a big fan of G-funk i disagree. Their were many producers making dope ass beats some who were even better than dr dre, for ex Battlecat, Cold187um, Havoc, Ant Banks, DJ Pooh etc etc

No doubt there were a lot of talented producers doing that G-Funk/P-Funk sound, but there were twice as many producers throwing whiny synths on a wack beat to get in on the act.

absoultely correct. anyone who was around back then should eb able to remember this..... the style was used and abused until it become old and played out, just like every other production trend that comes along.....some last longer than others, but that how it goes......

word.

What I think the west coast needs to do is come up with a brand new style of beats and call it the new west coast flavor. Then hopefully it will become the next big craze and bring the attention back to the west coast. Like G-Funk did during the 90s.

West Coast Veteran

Why not bring it back? I think that's how the West fell off. The media said G-Funk is played out then the artists decided to stop using that sound but G-Funk is what made the West popular. They could have still used that sound but make it evolve a bit like what Dre did on Chronic 2001. He still had the synths and whistles but he changed it up a bit. West should go back to the synths.

I mean the East Coast still uses the BOOM BAP sound with Primo, Alchemist (I know he's from L.A.), 9th Wonder, Statik Skeltah, etc. so why can't the West still use G-Funk? Boom Bap been around since before G-Funk came into the scene so why aren't people calling that outdated or for that sound to evolve?
