So I've been reading Ronin Ro's biography of Dr. Dre

...I was very impressed with Ronin Ro's book on Death Row Records "Have Gun Will Travel".   But this book is a huge disappointment in comparison.  It's hard to read a book when you know more than the author.  The purpose of reading a book is usually to learn more about something.  I find myself having to correct this dude, as he makes many small mistakes.  Like for example he says stuff like, "Eminem put out an EP with "Just Don't Give A Fuck" and "Brain Damage" before getting down with Dre (as if it wasn't an actual Aftermath release, and confusing it with the actual Slim Shady EP that Eminem did before Dre).  We are all hardcore fans here, so your average reader might not catch little stuff like that, but I found the book to be full of minor mistakes such as this.  And so far the book hasn't told me anything I didn't already know about the Aftermath Era.   

That's an early review.  I haven't been reading the book in order.  I always like to read about the 95 through 99 period in Dre's life.  His transition from leaving Death Row, starting Aftermath, the Firm album... then being saved by Eminem.    There was certainly no new information given about this era, and many mistakes.

Also he slips in his own opinions about the music at times, and often it doesn't make any sense.  Like he said something like the Murder Was The Case soundtrack was wack, even talking down Snoop's songs on the album and the Dogg Pounds "What Would You Do" (which was actually nominated for a grammy).  I'll get his exact quotes later but it's ridiculous the comments he made about alot of songs that are West Coast classics.

And to be fair, "Have Gun Will Travel" is not much better. Both books are a compendium of articles, gossip and rumours mixed up in semi-chronological order.

Word... it's been years since I read "Have Gun Will Travel".  But really I need to take a highlighter through Dre's book because I want to point out all the errors and inconsistencies here at the forum.

It is a big deal when you write somebody's biography and your supposed to be some kind of expert on the subject.

as with everyhing, with this book you need to connect the dots.
unfortunately a lot of people don't know shit, so they are not able to do that.

I absolutely agree. I was so disappointed with the book - there are heaps of small inconsistencies and mistakes. And, sure, you can overlook them, but when they all start to add together the end result is amateurish.
