Ferguson was a a great manager before he joined United aswell. He put a stop to the Old Firm at one point and even won the cup winners cup with Aberdeen. When he joined United, the squad of players he had were not up to scratch and as the years went on he steadily improved the squad. Look at the signings he's made (Schmeichel, Cantona, Ince, Keane, Yorke, Cole, Stam, Ronaldo etc) and the players he's bought through the youth system (Beckham, Giggs, Scholes, Nevilles etc). I'm not saying money had nothing to do with it, but his choice of signings have been pretty good and matured them into great players.

What you haven't pointed out is that Hiddink has led Holland and South Korea, a team that had never won a World cup match in prevoius 5 world cups to fourth place, and Russia to a Euro semi final and won the European Cup with PSV.

But in the end Fergie has took a mid table team and from nearly getting sacked, to one of the worlds most best teams. Which for me makes him the best manager modern day manager.

Hiddink is a good manager but m not gonna be getting too excited over what he has done.

Not totally unexpected.

Why would anyone get excited over whether the manager of one of their main rivals for the league championship is doing a good job or not?

Totally agree. Hiddink is a great coach no doubt, but Fergie is the greatest in modern football and in the top 3 of all time. He worked wonders at Aberdeen, St Mirren and Utd and he would have brung success to any other CLUB in the world. Hiddink may be a better manager at INternational level though as i think Fergie needs that day to day running of a club and being involved in everything to be successfull.

All you have to look at is the amount of players Fergie coached that have became managers, off the top of my head - Ince, Bruce, Strachan, Mcleish, Keane, Robson, Stark, Hughes. I'm sure there is more i just cant be fucked looking for them.

2, possibly 3 with United. A cup winners cup with Aberdeen. (Aberfuckingdeen Elano, have you even heard of them!?) Sign of a good manager is not just having one great team, but rebuilding. Fergie has had 3 - 4 exceptional teams wi United, where as Hiddink has moved around a lot. And lets not pretend he was a miracle worker for South Korea, it was the referees who got them to the semi's, not Hiddink. He got an excellent Australian side (Kewell, Viduka, Cahill, Bresciano, Grella) to the 2nd round of the WC - Big deal, Ukraine got to the quarters that year.

Hiddink is a great coach, but in my opinion not close to one of the best.
