Should Xzibit Be Considered One Of The Greats of All-Time?
« on: June 05, 2009, 10:46:22 PM »
This should be a good debate.  I think Xzibit's name should be mentioned along with the greatest hip-hop artists of all time.  Here's why...

-3 Superior Albums:  His first 3 were all near classics, and superior to albums compared to most of what was out there.  He was hott during some of the most competitive years in hip-hop, and I think he still managed to stand out as one of the greatest.

-Commercial, underground, backpackers... all gave respect to Xzibit.  How many rappers can claim that?

-Was on fire from 99 thru 2001.   He dropped nothing but bangers for 2 years straight.  He helped revive Dre's carear with his work on "What's the Difference" and "LA Niggaz".  Compare "What's the Difference" to the old Hittman version and you can see just how much he really brought that track to life.

-He helped resurrect the West Coast in the Up In Smoke Era.  "Year 2000" created a huge buzz for his albums, along with classic guest appearances on Dre, Snoop, and Eminem's albums.   This dude held down the West from 96-2002

Xzibit's bangers:

1.  "What's The Difference"
2.  "Bitch Please 1"
3.  "Bitch Please 2"
4.  "Papparazzi"
5.  "At The Speed of Life"
6.  "The Foundation"
7.  "Year 2,000"
8.  "Focus"
9.  "Best Of Things"
10. "Get Your Walk On"

and so many more... "Say My Name", "Symphony in X Minor", "X"... too many to name

If you consider only up to and including Restless then yes. But his newer stuff (last 2 albums) were pretty awful IMO. Also the whole Pimp My Ride thing was pretty weak.

Considering his disco, yes. Not a single weak album imo. WOMD is a personal classic.

I'd say West Coast Legend no doubt (Up there when you name Snoop, Game, Cube, E-40, DJ Quik, Dogg Pound etc). For him to be considered to be one of THE greatest Period, I think he needs another 2-3 albums that are really strong from start to finish...

It is possible for a quality MC like him! Hes working on something new right?

I think his body work ain't perfect (1 classic and 2 near classics), but he's definitely one of the greatest ever to touch a mic. Great lyricist, nice flow and incredible flow. He is the westcoast Method Man, definitely a Westcoast legend and only time will tell if he'll be considered one of the greatests ever. As of now, he is not, but he's definitely got more talent than most.

West Coast great - yes

A great rapper of his era - yes

One of the greatest of all-time - hell no. In 25 years of hip-hop history, Xzibit doesn't stand out as a legend.

I would say from 1999-2004, he was the best in the west, giving him westcoast legend status. All Time Great... I'm on the fence. Not yet, I have a hard time putting Jay-Z on that list, and Jay and X are from the same era.

All time
Tupac (For All Eyez on Me/Makaveli/Me Against The World)

Biggie (For Ready to Die/Life after death)

Eminem (The Marshall Mathers LP)

 Nas (Illmatic)

N.W.A (Straight Outta Compton)

Cypress Hill (Cypress Hill/Black Sunday/III Temples of Boom)

Dr. Dre (The Chronic/2001)

Snoop Dogg (Doggystyle)

As for Xzibit...well West Coast Legend For sure, but he still needs to create that 1 album, everyone will talk about years to come (like the 1s mentioned above).

Also, yes I know I forgot some greats, but I just wanted to make a point. They all have Albums that have topped the charts, been critical acclaimed, have caused a major controversy, and broken records, high selling, and have been able to affect not only the rap world for ever, but have managed to change the World Forever, and will be able to last the test of time.

Until Xzibit can make a ablum like that (that has at least 5 of the 8 reasons I mentioned above), He's not a legend, hes still a great, and a legend for the west, but he won't be one of the Legends to be remembered for all time until he hits that perfect album.

Do I believe he can be? Oh yeah, he just needs to create that 1 perfect album. His magnum opus.
