Greatest Laker Point Guard NOT named Magic Johnson
« on: June 11, 2009, 11:44:45 PM »
Ok, Magic Johnson, greatest point guard ever, ok, done.

Now, the Lakers have had a history of getting great point guards, and most of them were all underdog Point Guards who were able to lead the Lakers to titles, and greatness. So who is the Greatest Laker leader not named Magic Johnson.

Slater Martin (1949 - 1956) - Could be seen as the first great Laker point guard. Leading the Lakers to 4 of their 5 titles in Minneapolis, Martin was known as a great defender, and voted to 4 All Star games as a Laker (7 overall). Martin's best Laker season was his last season, the 2nd year of the shot clock era, Martin had 6apg, and 13ppg.

Rodney Clark Hundley (1957-1963) - Hod Rod was the leader on the floor during the transition from Minneapolis to Los Angeles. His career was cut shot at the end of 28 due to bad knees, was still able to make 2 All Star games and had his best season in 1959-1960 when he had 13ppg, 5rpg and 4apg.

Gail Goodrich (1965-1968, 1970-1976) - Too small to play pro ball, all he did was make the all star 3 times as a Laker, and lead the greatest Laker team ever to 69 wins and the 1972 title. 1972 was also his best year in the NBA, 26ppg, to go with 4.5apg, and a career high 25ppg in the playoffs.

Nick Van Exel (1993-1998) - Nick Van Exel, who hit many clutch shots in his career is 6th all time in the NBA for 3pointers made. Only making 1 All Star game as a Laker, Van Exel's best season as a Laker was 94-95 season  which saw him go for 17ppg with 8 apg. Though unlike the his counter parts, Van Exel was never able to win the big one.

Derek Fisher (1996-2004, 2007-) - Though not always a starter, Fisher was always a finisher, and lead the Lakers to 3 titles so far. Not making the All Star team as a Laker, Fisher was known in the playoffs with big shots. Fisher's best year as a Laker was 2000-2001 his first year starting which he had 11.5ppg and 4.4apg.

i'd definitely say Derek Fisher is the most important PG after magic, but all around best, now that's another question, that i'd have to think about another day or two before committing.

I think Gail Goodrich will go down as the best out of that group, but as for "greatest"... I guess that depends on the criteria. Fish got the championships, but he was never an All-Star caliber player, he was just an amazing role player with amazing leadership.

is this another one of your joke threads? Gail Goodrich, easily...Fisher is a role player. Goodrich was a superstar who's jersey hangs in the rafters...LOL. come on, Mdogg. that's 2 in a row.

Well, not really, Because Fisher has been more money that Goodrich. Goodrich has the stats and the All Star games, BUT Fisher has the titles and the clutch moments. Goodrich was never able to be that closer, except for 1972, his playoff stats never matched up to his season stats. Now better point guard, Goodrich easy, but greatness is usually defined by titles.

It was those Nick Van Exel teams that got me back into the Lakers. When Magic retired, I was even cheering for the Clippers...lol. I always loved the underdog, which is how I got started being an Angel fan, that it made sense for me to root for the Clippers. But man, Van Exel was killing it, I turned back a Laker game in 94, and they won in the 4th quarter. It was like every game was either they lose by blow out, or win by the last shot... haha. Those Laker teams were not the best, but man I loved watching them, and really wished Van Exel and Eddie Jones, and even Elden were on the title teams. Van Exel's exit came when he shoved that ref in Denver, since then Jerry West I think wanted to trade him, but his friendship with Shaq kept him around (the shove was before signing Shaq, so West used him to communicate), Jones trade was the ultimate power move by GM Shaq 'cause Jones was almost like Kobe's big brother, and when the Shaq/Kobe beef started out of no where Shaq wanted a 3 point thread andso out went Eddie, and of course Elden went with him. Man, As much as I love Shaq, that was a punk move, especially 'cause it did bit him in the ass later. Elden went with that trade with Eddie, and it was Elden in 2004 that was able to guard Shaq one on one and allowed Detroit to focus on everyone else and Detroit beat the Lakers. All my years watching Shaq, Elden was always the best at defending him, Dikembe Mutombo was always a close second.

Smush was cool... too bad the Lakers center sucked when Smush was there. What was that centers name again... I don't remember... something about small hands.

ha ha ha... only 2 years as a starter, mainly Van Exel's back up. But he was good, and if Magic never retired, he would have great off the bench, like he was suppose to be used.
