wtf, this shit looked horrible in trailers (im not a big sci fi guy), but you guys and your overly positive reviews might have me check it out, what is it about it thats so good?

Really, the only Sci Fi thing about it is that there are aliens involved and you get to see some of their weapons in action.  Beside that, it's just a good story.  Also, it is told in a unique blend of different techniques.  You have your normal camera angle,  the documentary style camera angle form like in the Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield, security camera angles, use of media (news, cable news, stupid headlines), and also mockumentary style.  Each form is used brilliantly to advance the story.
