The Urge to Compare
« on: September 08, 2009, 02:39:56 AM »
Why do people need to people need to compare other albums to each other? Can't you just sit and enjoy the album(s) separately?

These threads are getting lamer by the minute..

It makes sense though. If a album is smiler or a SEQUEL to another album its kind going to happen. People compare ALL of slims albums cause they ALL have the same topics. People compare Sequel albums cause they want to know if its up 2 snuff or a piece of shit..

It makes sense to compare and contract work.  That's how you're able to develop a rating scale.  IF not every album would be a masterpiece.

With that said, if you over scrutinize you can end up not accepting a piece for what it is and not enjoying it but consistently finding yourself hating.  Just recognize its flaws and truths.

For example. Rick Ross is a fat fucking liar and seems like a piece of shit but if you look at his music as fictional story telling it's enjoyable just like Raekown.  This doesn't have to do with compare and contrasting but the core notion is in place.

A better example is someone like 50 Cent.  You can compare his recent work to Get Rich because it set a high standard.  People expected great things from him and when he doesn't deliver on that quality level it's disappointing.  It doesn't mean his recent work is bad, if you stop focusing on Get Rich you can enjoy Curits which in the climate it came out in was a rap record.
Cool breeze; I'm hopping out of new Beams
My outfit ran me a few G's but none of that will matter if you leave
I used to be an Adam with two Eves and shawtys automatically do me
Excuse me, all that happened before you doesn't matter
I'm a vision of the future climbing the success ladder
Recline, in the mean time, twenty three shine, diamond bling blind as I rewind

you got a point there.

i think comparing in general is not the issue though, but how it is presented

LOL... why even have a forum to discuss music then if that's your outlook?

...it wouldnt' be very useful for us to just say, "I think this album is dope" or "I think this album is wack".  Crucial Conflict The Final Tic was a "dope" album, and Dre's The Chronic was a "dope" album.  But are they equal?  Ofcourse not.  One album was a novelty record and the other album changed the history of music forever.  So obviously like ACTION! said we have to compare albums so that their can be a usable standard in which to rate albums.

Another reason is we don't have time to listen to every album that comes out.  So if somebody tells me an album sounds like Lil Wayne then I know I probably shouldn't waste my time checking it out.

Also, it's fun to compare, for the purpose of completing a more accurate description of an album, because this raises the level of the debate.

Most times it's good to compare. But the way I see it here on the Dub; it's getting ridiculous.

Without comparison, what you will get is... Relapse is "wack", Souljah Boy's new album is "wack".  Obviously Eminem is on a whole different level and standard then Souljah Boy is, but without comparison, they are both "wack".

You said you didn't want people to compare one artist to another.  So if I review Souljah Boy's album and say it's wack, and review Eminem's album and say it's wack... then it looks like they have the same review.  But if I compare the two I would say Eminem's is way better.
