Manchester City Arsena 4 - 2

AH AH AH  :loser:

MANCHESTER, Sep 12: Ex-Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor scored his fourth goal of term as Manchester City saw off his old club Arsenal 4-2 in their 'top four play-off' at Eastlands as the Premier League revived dramatically after the international break.

Big-spending City had been pre-season favourites to push the Gunners out of the elite and capitalised on a perfect opportunity to prove their point.

Arsenal, missing injured Andrey Arshavin, could have taken the lead early on when William Gallas misplaced a header from only six yards. He - and Arsenal - paid a heavy price for that miss when Micah Richards struck in the 20th minute.

The Gunners' defence hesitated, considering an offside claim, as the England defender saw his header from a long free kick rebound off the bar but into the net off keeper Manuel Almunia.

City might have extended their lead just before half-time when Adebayor, who cost City £25m from Arsenal during the summer, wasted his first chance of the afternoon to claim the goal he craved.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, seeking to change the pattern of play, brought on long-time injury victim Tomas Rosicky 10 minutes into the second half. Within another 10 minutes the Gunners' change of personnel and approach paid off with an equaliser for Robin Van Persie. City fatally allowed the Dutchman time to turn and shoot home past keeper Shay Given for the equaliser.

Arsenal's relief did not last long. Seven minutes later and City were back in front. Song Billong failed to halt a raid down the right by Richards who provided a simple pass which Wales striker Craig Bellamy converted into City's second goal with a first-time shot.

City should have extended their lead almost immediately. Adebayor jinked his way past three Arsenal defenders to the byline and crossed only to see Shaun Wright-Phillips somehow smash his shot wide. However the Togo striker made amends minutes later by scoring City's third.

Provocative celebration

He then ran all the way to the other end of the pitch to celebrate in front of the travelling Arsenal fans and was correctly booked for his provocative idiocy.

As if that were not enough, Adebayor then turned up in front of his goal to clear a shot from Abou Diaby off the City goal-line.

Arsenal, by now, had brought on Eduardo to try to save a point one way or another. But their vain attempts at a comeback merely left further gaps at the back which Bellamy exploited with City's fourth goal.

Rosicky celebrated his long-awaited return to action with a second Arsenal goal and then Van Persie even  hit a post but City were deserved winners even if the margin perhaps flattered them.

Emmanuel Adebayor hits back at Arsenal fans who booed him

Emmanuel Adebayor, braced for a hot reception from travelling Arsenal fans at the City of Manchester Stadium today, took the hostilities a stage farther last night.

The Togo player, who left the Emirates Stadium under a cloud this summer, hit out at the London club’s supporters last night.

“Arsenal have a lot of fans who are not fans,” he said. “What is good is that the City fans truly love you.

“Arsenal have fans from America and Jamaica. Today they are Arsenal fans, tomorrow they will be Liverpool fans and after tomorrow they will be Manchester United fans.”

In a direct reference to the breakdown in relations between him and the Arsenal fans towards the end of last season, the striker added:“If you boo your player every weekend, I am very sorry, you are not true fans.”

Adebayor, who was accused of pursuing a lucrative deal elsewhere by some Arsenal supporters, maintained that he had wanted to stay but that the club had decided otherwise.

“Arsenal forced me out,” he said. “I told Arsène [Wenger, the Arsenal manager], ‘No matter what you do, I will not leave the club.’ Arsène told me, ‘You have to leave because financially we are very bad.’ That makes it more painful. Arsène knows I didn’t leave for money. Enjoying my football is more important to me than money.”

Adebayor has made an impressive start for his new club, scoring three goals in four games and faces the chance to enhance his reputation with his new club with today’s game followed by the Manchester derby against United tomorrow week and Mark Hughes, the City manager, is convinced the “upset” Arsenal supporters have caused Adebayor has served only to strengthen the Togo striker’s desire to torment his former club this afternoon and other defences for the rest of the season.

Hughes suggested that Wenger’s knowledge of the striker’s inner workings would count for little if the player continued to scale the heights he is capable of.

“I’m not sure he’s bitter [about the treatment he received from Arsenal's supporters],” Hughes said. “I think he’s upset, it’s certainly something that has affected him quite deeply.

“He has no problem with Arsenal Football Club itself because he sees it as a huge part of his football life and how he developed as a player but you just sense, and he’s said it himself, that he can’t quite understand why the Arsenal fans turned against him.

“That’s maybe why we’re getting the benefit of how he’s playing and his demeanour at the moment because City fans absolutely love him. They’ve never seen a player like Adebayor in a blue shirt, I would suggest.”

Hughes moved for Adebayor after a failed attempt to persuade Samuel Eto’o, the Barcelona striker, to join City this summer, but the manager appears to be more than satisfied with the way things have worked out.

With Roque Santa Cruz some way off a return, Robinho struggling with an ankle injury and Carlos Tévez facing between ten days and three weeks out because of a knee problem that is almost certain to rule him out of the derby against Manchester United, his former club, at Old Trafford a week tomorrow, Adebayor will be the fulcrum of City’s attack against Arsenal.

“He’s in a select band,” Hughes said. “I have looked at many, many top players with huge reputations and I don’t see many up there with the qualities that Ade has got. He has that ability to open up defences despite what the opposition might do.”

Hughes believes City can match Arsenal for “creative and expansive” football, although it is the ability to mix steel with silk that the manager believes will determine how successful his team are this season.

“Good players understand that sometimes you have to batten down the hatches and recognise when the momentum is changing in games and now we have guys who understand when there is a shift in the game,” Hughes said.

Now usually i dont like Adebayor, and wouldn't have a good word to say about the guy but i thought that was class today, Arsenal fans gave him absolute pelters all last year and were giving him dogs abuse all game, but dont like it when the big man gives some back. Deserved a yellow but i'm sure he doesn;t mind.

This year the derby of manchester will be REALLY interesting,i know the reds supporters are already scared  ;D

I personally cant wait, no fear at all only anticipation.

What is there actually to be afraid of ?

All these city fans getting excited because they have won 4 games, its only september lets see where they are come march.

And why was he getting stick ? Because he spent all of the summer before trying to engineer a move to barca or milan. Does anyone remember when he called a press conference to announce he was staying at arsenal to then walk of the stage and then say to the press he would be happy to go to barca.

He was still at it once he agreed a deal with city trying to then move to us or chelsea.

The arsenal fans were right to vent there anger. Ever since he joined city he has been slagging them off, and then he intentionally winds them up, its funny what he did but prob not right.

WP to MC for the win but lets be honest this wasn't a 4-2 result it would of been fair as a draw, we're both teams who are good going forward but are unpredictable when it comes to defending, i still think we'll come 4th but it'll be close.

The Adebayor thing makes me laugh, he makes it seem like he's a victim of abuse and doesn't know why, when he's been trying to get a move away for ages and i'm happy he went, he's a great player on his day but he's not consistent at all and as soon as something doesn't go his way he's like a little kid. I can't wait untill Robinho/Tevez/ Cruz/ Bellamy are all fit and playing well and Ade doesn't get in the team, he'll do his usual like he did at Monaco and then at us because it's a known fact that he's one of these players who's disruptive. To be honest i'm not even mad at the celebration as i would have done the same thing if i was in his position but what really pisses me off is how he was purposely trying to injure our players yesterday (the stamp on Fabregas, stamp on RVP face, kick out at Song etc) these are players who he's played with for 3/4 years, and for that i've lost all respect for him

Hilarious celebration. I'd do the same thing if I had a problem with my former team and scored against them.

Some of these cocky acts are fun to watch

You are spot on mate, Adebayor is a bit of a cunt and deserved all the abuse he gets, my point is dont give it out if you are going to get offended by a little bit back. (For further examples see Gary Neville infront of Liverpool fans a few years back and Neil Lennon at about every ground he played at for Celtic).
