Two men were shot early Thursday as they arrived for a dawn prayer service at a North Hollywood synagogue, and authorities were investigating whether the incident was a hate crime.The shooting occurred about 6:20 a.m. in the underground parking structure at Adat Yeshurun Valley Sephardic Congregation, located in the 12400 block of Sylvan Street.The victims, both men in their 30s, were shot after they arrived at the synagogue and got out of their separate vehicles, Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Michel Moore said during a news conference at the scene.One suffered leg wounds and the other was wounded in the "lower extremities." Both were expected to survive, Moore said.One of the victims was in surgery at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center on Thursday morning, a hospital spokeswoman said. The other victim was transported to Valley Presbyterian Hospital, but no information on his condition was available.Police were unsure of a motive."As far as we know, no words were exchanged," said LAPD spokesman Lt. John Romero. "Just a very angry man with a gun."A boy of about 17, who Moore said loosely matches the description of the gunman - a black man in his early 20s wearing a black hoodie shirt - was questioned near the scene, Moore said. A weapon was not recovered.Local television stations aired footage of the teen being apprehended and handcuffed, but LAPD did not identify him as the assailant."We want to be careful," Romero said. "He is not the suspect until we are sure."By early afternoon, he said the teen was questioned and released.When asked whether police were still searching the neighborhood for a suspect, Romero said, "We are confident we don't have a suspect in the neighborhood."
