Greatest Anti-American Wrestlers
« on: November 04, 2009, 05:31:35 PM »
I will be honest, the Patriotic list was easier, you had a real number 1 wrestler, the gimmick is usually not over done because faces tend patriotic anyways, so few used it as their main gimmick. But to do this list was damn hard. Many villains, when they go anti American, they go all out. The heel side of wrestling has so many anti-American wrestlers, it's unreal. From William Regal, to Lance Storm, to Christian, to Nikolai Volkoff, to Ludvig Borga to even the number of Japanese wrestlers and just other foreign wrestlers all came with an anti-American gimmick to get cheap heat. So it was harder to find the best heels than the best faces. I even thought Sgt. Slaughter should have been on this list, but I think there is no way he gets in over these 5. As for the Original Sheik, his gimmick was more of a madman and not Anti-American, so I tried to keep it the most Anti-American of them all.

Yokozuna

No one can slam him, his manager celebrates December 7th like it's Christmas, you can't beat him in a cage match, hell you can't even knock him off his feet. Yokozuna was the best anti-American gimmick in the early 90's. Hailing from Japan (like so many others, no city, just the whole country) Yokozuna challenged every American to try and stop his reign. Getting pro USA chants from even the likes of Bret Hart and the Headshrinkers, he defied logic on what was American (though he wasn't even Japanese, but that's besides the point) and what just him losing the title would mean a great day in the United States. That's a true anti-American heel.

Iron Sheik

Born of the Iranian hostage situation, the Iron Sheik found a new sense of heat as Americans took out their frustration on him. Becoming the most hated wrestler in the WWF, the Iron Sheik would challenge Americans to test of strength, and then when the Americans would look like they would beat him, he'd sneak attack them, put them in the Camel Clutch and do them like the old country. Finally getting the title off All-American Bob Backlund, the Iron Sheik became the most important transition champion ever, as he was that great American enemy that held the title, so that Hulk Hogan can come in and defeat. Even after that, the Iron Sheik would team with Nikolai Volkoff to defeat the US Express (which was the team that Real American was really made for) and keep his American heat.

Mr. Fuji

The man celebrated Pearl Harbor like it was Christmas, and made the wrestling fans in the Westcoast territories want to riot. Mr. Fuji would have many partners over the years, mainly with Japanese gimmicks, and no matter who was his partner, they would gain huge heat, and usually win the territories tag titles. Mr. Fuji would also gain fame as a huge heel manager, taking some of the best talent to titles, including Yokozuna who is also on this list. His contribution as a tag team wrestler, along with a manager bringing new stars to fight against the stars and strips proves that he is truly one of the greatest anti-Americans ever.

"The Russian Bear" Ivan Koloff

With one knee drop off the top rope, and one pin, Ivan Koloff did something no one in 8 years did, in 1971 he beat Bruno Sammartino. In the process he almost incited a riot in Madison Square Gardens. Koloff had the perfect gimmick to make American's mad, in the depths of the Cold War he was one of the first Soviet grapplers, and he might have been the best. His stay in the WWWF was short, but his time in NWA would solidify him as he would help bring in other "Russians" to fight the USA over the 70's and 80's. Starting one of the first factions, the Russians would go on to include his "nephew" Nikita Koloff, American turncoat Don Kernodle and Krusher Kruschev (Demolition Smash) and dominate from 84-86. Eventually Nikita would turn heel and Ivan would fight in various factions until he retired in the early 90's.

Bret Hart

The best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be. Bret Hart was the man, he was a great face, and he was an even better heel. Frustrated with the fans, Hart let them know how he felt by recruiting his own blood in Owen Hart, Davey Boy Smith and Jim Neidhart to form the most hated heel faction outside the nWo. Hart also did something that was genius, his heel turn was not with all fans, just American fans. Since the WWF traveled to Canada, it would be there he played the face. Around the globe, since many countries had anti-American feelings, they too would cheer Bret. It was almost like Hart was causing a USA vs. the Globe feel. Hart would have the crowd in the palm of his hands. Being the best wrestler of his era and a long time fan favorite also added to his credibility. Sadly it was a short gimmick; Brian Pillman, who joined as a Canadian sympathizer, would pass in the middle, and then all but Owen Hart would leave after the Montreal Screw job. But it's lasting impact of the sport is still felt. In Canada they cheer their Canadian wrestlers and boo the American faces, and many Canadians have tried to create their own Team Canadas, the best being WCW's with Lance Storm.  So for the short time that Bret Hart was the anti-American heel we all hated, no one in wrestling history pulled it off better.

I almost listed it, it was between him and Yoko for the 5th spot. The fact that it was banned from TV was enough to put him on, but Yokozuna I think was just slightly better.

yeah; plus Yoko had a longer run.
if Hassan had been around for even another year or two, I would've put him on there over Yoko lol.

on another note, the TNA group World Elite might be good for this list in the future if they keep the group together for a while. They're like a multiple, diverse version of Muhammad Hassan lol.

He was being booked to be the number 1 contender for the WWE title when all the controversy happened. If he pulled off a victory over the Undertaker, shit, I would have had to put him over Yoko, but now, the world will never know with that gimmick.
