It's official: The Angels have agreed on a one-year contract with Hideki Matsui.

The team issued a news release on Wednesday morning, which stated that the 2009 World Series Most Valuable Player is the newest member of the Angels, essentially taking over the designated-hitter spot and ending Vladimir Guerrero's six-year stint in Anaheim.

Reports Monday by ESPN.com and The New York Times indicated that the deal is worth $6.5 million -- half of the $13 million salary Matsui made with the Yankees this past season.

really pains me to see my beloved World Series MVP, Godzilla go; you Angels fans better be fucking happy, he's a great addition to any team.

see why we have such a bigger payroll? we pay our players twice as much as they want. ;)

but he takes Vlad's place, huh? that's a big power bat, i wonder where he winds up.

You have a link ?  My boss is Japanese and he says its well known in Japan Ichiro and Matsui don't like each other AT ALL.  He says this supposed friendship is made up by the American media because they're both Japanese.

i heard it on ESPN when it started floating around that he likely won't be back for the 2010 season; but without a doubt said that he is interested in playing with Ichiro on the Mariners.

but lmfao, i wouldn't be surprised if your boss is right.

In Japan the fans love him but in the actually clubhouse he known for being a Japanese Barry Bonds.  Dude was hated by his team.

well in "Baseball circles" so to speak, the word is that Matsui was always much more famous in Japan than Ichiro because of his homerun prowess

and Ichiro ofcourse is a singles-hitter moreso than a power guy

well, we're the Yankees lol.

we don't just let people walk & hope some no-name from Triple A can play half as well.

we got ourselves Granderson, but when Damon is out too, we need to grab another bat; even though we don't need it.

as for Matsui, when we play the Angels next year, they will have Matsui in Vlad's spot.

i mean, Matsui is a good hitter, but doesn't bring that fear or power that Vlad brings to an at bat.

but World Series MVP, no doubt; he can have those games where you're just like, "he's the fuckin' man".

will it hurt us as a team? probably not; but now he could hurt us in a game, where he just hits his ass off.

Matsui was old and couldn't play the field anymore.  And even just as a DH you still couldn't trust he could stay healthy.  Smart move by the Yanks not re-upping.

he might be older but he got mvp so wouldnt he be able to help them next season?
i mean its only a season later, how could his ability have changed less than a year later when he won a mvp and world series less than a year later?

It was 6 games... way too few games to determine anything.  And plently of below average players have won WS MVP.  I'm not calling Matsui below average just saying in general

why?  the guy can't play defense at all

his only value is as a DH or a pinch-hitter

meanwhile we can DH A-rod more and help him rest his hip as he shrinks down from steroid use lol

Matsui was the man in the playoffs - that is not a doubt.  what i'm upset at is that he left for only 6 million bucks....that's more than enough for a solid DH lol.

but he can be replaced.
