LMAO, Mariners trade Silva to Cubs for Milton Bradley
« on: December 18, 2009, 11:26:04 AM »
Carlos Silva might be the worst pitcher I've seen in the last 10 years as a Mariners fan, and we found a team that was actually willing to trade for him  8). I know Bradley ain't the best but the fact that we got anything for that piece of shit is incredible to me.

The Milton Bradley(notes) era at Wrigley Field has finally come to an end.

And the days of the Mariners cutting huge checks for the huge and hugely ineffective Carlos Silva(notes)?

Those are gone, too.

According to Larry Stone of the Seattle Times (and confirmed by a Tim Brown source) the Cubs and Mariners are "on the verge" of swapping Bradley, Silva and their regrettable contracts.* The transaction's completion would ensure that the trade — which Tim originally sniffed out at last week's winter meetings — be placed among the biggest "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" deals in baseball history.

*Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune tweets that Cubs will get $9 million from Seattle, which would actually be $6 million once the players' salaries offset.

The troubles of both players have been well chronicled. Bradley, who has two years and $21 million remaining on his contract, spent most of 2009 getting off to an ineffective start, labeling Cubs fans as racist, forgetting how many outs there were and getting suspended for the balance of the schedule in September. The soap opera was a season-long saga that required a resolution, but GM Jim Hendry completely decimated Bradley's trade value by sending him home instead of tolerating another two weeks in an attempt to create any kind of market for the right fielder.

Now the Cubs will have to take on the two years and $23 million left of Silva's contract (plus a $2 million buyout in 2012) because Hendry and manager Lou Piniella never found a way to get Bradley to ignore the hyper-reactive Chicago fanbase and media market.

Unlike Bradley, Silva is a sunk cost, an unsightly product of the Bill Bavasi era in Seattle who went 4-15 with a 6.46 ERA in 2008 and spent most of '09 on the disabled list. He may bring fewer tantrums, scowls and controversies than Bradley to the Wrigley Field clubhouse, but he won't bring as much — if anything — to the field.

Because he unloaded a completely useless contract for one that could contain some sort of payoff (Bradley's '09 numbers were pretty much in line with all of his seasons except for his career '08 year), Seattle GM Jack Zduriencik is going to receive his share of laurels for another offseason coup. Though it's quite possible that Bradley continues his child-like behavior or again struggles with injuries, Jack Z. is assuming almost no risk and can cut Bradley without much negative impact. What he did was trade a scratched-off lottery ticket for one that might still be a winner — or at least a decent lineup cog. That's impressive.

Hendry, meanwhile, is the figure who comes out losing the most. First for signing the mercurial Bradley to a contract in one of the sport's biggest fishbowls and then for getting nothing in return for him except a negative statistical impact and an even bigger weight on the Cubs' already-strained books. All in all, not a very good way to impress a new boss.

I hear that, but the Mariners have a much more stable clubhouse than the Cubs (allegedly) had. And if he's an unproductive prick then we can cut him. The real beauty of this deal was getting rid of Silva.

the Ms made a bad move here in my opinion.

Bradley is a cancer for any team. He's going to disrupt the stability on the team just like he's done so with every other club he's been a part of.

it would be awesome if they could flip bradley before its all said and done....id like to see the Ms knock off the angels in the west....and bradley doesnt deserve to be on a winning team.  he needs to play for the iowa corn hunters or some shit.  lmao

Yeah, Bradley definitely doesn't have a good history. But he's gonna be under close supervision and if he starts pulling the same shit he'll get cut. Wakamatsu got the front office to get rid of Yunieski Betancourt because he wasn't a good listener, and Betancourt hasn't had nearly as many problems as Bradley. I really see the whole thing as a low risk high reward cause if he starts acting up then we'll just cut him, straight up. Plus he's not coming off a huge year like he was when he went to the Cubs, he has to prove himself, if he fucks up here this could be it for him.

Actually when he was in Texas, Bradley didn't get in any trouble and his teammates loved him.  And with the Cubbies, Pinella didn't like him from the get go so he never really got a fair shake.
