Quote
Needing offense to keep up with the New York Yankees and a third baseman to replace an aging and ailing Mike Lowell, the Boston Red Sox on Monday agreed to the framework of a two-year contract with free-agent third baseman Adrian Beltre, according to league sources.

Adrian Beltre is expected to sign a two-year deal with the Red Sox, a contract valued at $10 million for the first season.

Lowell, a Fenway favorite and a part of World Series teams in Florida (2003) and Boston (2007), was nearly traded to Texas last month, but a physical examination revealed a need for thumb surgery, which Lowell has undergone.

It is unclear what the Red Sox intend to do with Lowell, who has another year – at $12 million – left on his contract. David Ortiz is the regular DH and Beltre is the best third baseman in the league. Conceivably, they could platoon Lowell and the left-handed hitting Ortiz at DH. More likely, they’ll work again to trade him, perhaps returning to talks with the Rangers. There were rumors Monday the New York Mets could have interest in Lowell as a first baseman.

Meantime, Beltre likely would bat sixth, behind Ortiz, in the Red Sox lineup. While the Red Sox added John Lackey to their starting rotation, the offense remained a concern, particularly with the Yankees upgrading with Curtis Granderson in center field, and in spite of recent Marco Scutaro and Mike Cameron acquisitions. Jason Bay, who led them in home runs and RBIs last season, recently signed with the Mets.

Lowell's been killin' it the last few years, good replacement.

can't believe this guy had like 50 homeruns a few years back.

Another great pick up for Boston.  Saves a lot of runs with that glove.

He didn't really do shit here compared to what he was supposed to do but he was still probably the best defensive third basemen and an above average hitter with some pop, I'll miss having him here. With that said I'm more than happy with Chone Figgins  8) 8)

Hack whats with the homo erotic fantasies ?  And how is anyone slobbering over Beltre.  The only reason your punk ass is catching feelings like a faggot is because he plays for the Sox now.  You need to take a step outside your log cabin and go moose hunting or chop down some firewood.  Get the anger and homoerotic feelings out of your system Hack.

HOW IS THIS BETTER THAN MIKE LOWELL?

First of you're white and live in a log cabin.  You have never seen a black person in your life.  Please don't use the N word.

Where did I mention Mike Lowell anywhere ?

No one said anything about Beltre being better than Lowell.  Again a desperate reach by a Yankee fan.  But if you want to maybe see why the Sox would prefer Beltre over Lowell I'll enlighten you.  Lowell bodies just can't hold up to the everyday grind anymore.  While Beltre missed some time this year it was due to a freak injury, a bleeding testicle.  Now on to point two, Theo Epstein is huge into sabermetrics.  Sabermetrics cats believe pitching and defense win championships.  Beltre is quite possibly the best defensive 3rd basemen in Baseball.  While the offense has taken a hit this off season the Sox have improved their D and pitching.  I know you hate the Sox but they have quite possibly the best rotation in Baseball.  They have three legit number one starters in their rotation.  Now on the offensive tip.  I can't deny up until this point Lowell has been the more consistent offensive player but again his health is a huge concern.  And in the Sox eyes maybe they feel leaving a pitchers ball park and coming into a hitters ballpark will improve his his line from last year.  No doubt he had a down year last season but possibly that had something to do with having a broken testicle.

Beltre ain't gonna give you 40 homers anymore but the guy flat out plays his ass off no matter what. The guy got his balls smashed by a line drive (with no cup) and played the rest of the game and got 3 hits, dude is unreal.
