i agree it was in improvement over st anger but i think if you are comparing it to that it doesnt matter what they did, it would have looked better in comparison. lets just imagine they released this instead of st anger, i think the backlash would have been pretty similar.

im no doubt in the minority when I say there isn't  a bad Metallica album. although St. Anger is easily my least favorite.

i liked a couple of songs off of St. Anger, but overall it wasnt up to par with what we expect from Metallica.  that being said, St. Anger shits on a lot of current rock albums.

The one thing I did like about "St. Anger" was that musically, I thought it sounded a lot heavier than "Load" or "Re-Load."  In that respect I thought it sounded more like a Metallica album than "Load or "Re-Load."  However, I just couldn't get into their lyrics on that one.

if i wanted music that was a aggressive id go listen to some heavy metal and not some very poorly written nu-metal. yes i said it , metallica were using nu-metal riffs on st anger  all the way through. anyone who plays guitar will be able to tell you this in an instant. everyone is entitled to their opinion but i dont see how anyone couldnt see how poorly written than album was. the songs were all too long for no good reason. in old metallica songs there was actually progression to justify that, in st anger and death magnetic they are simply repeating the riffs over and over and over again pointlessly.

I'm pretty much in agreement with you on "St. Anger."  I also thought it was a poorly written album, lyric-wise.  Perhaps musically it did have a more nu-metal sound to it than their classic heavy metal sound.  I don't play guitar and honestly, I haven't listened to "St. Anger" that much (mostly because after hearing it, I didn't want to listen to it anymore).  I can say that when I initially heard it, my feeling was that it at least sounded heavier than "Load" and "Re-Load."  I think "Load" and "Re-Load" were both better albums than "St. Anger", because to me, they were better lyrically.  But I don't feel like "Load" or "Re-Load" sounded like Metallica albums at all.  Either way, I didn't like "St. Anger," at all.
I think where our opinion differs most is that I thought "Death Magnetic" was a substantial improvement over "Load," "Re-Load," "S&M," and Definitely "St. Anger."  But I would say it is nowhere near as good as "Kill 'Em All" "Master of Puppets" "Ride the Lightning" "And Justice for All..." or even "Metallica," (The Black Album).
