5 years later: The Game - The Documentary

Yea that album was bangin back then and stayed in the cd changer for months but I won't bump that shit now so nope it's not a classic to me.

I'm going to say the same thing I've always said -- if you have to ask if an album is a classic, it isn't.  "Classic" albums are no-brainers, no questions asked.  The mere fact that this thread is asking if The Documentary is a classic is proof that it isn't.

Do you see anybody making threads, "Is The Chronic a classic?"  "Is Illmatic a classic?"  "Is "Paid in Full a classic?"  Of course not, because those actually are classic albums.

As for The Documentary, the album has no gravity whatsoever.  It's filled with the standard cliches, Game doesn't have a good voice, and his technique really isn't that great (he got better over the next couple of albums).  The gimmick of being "the game" that is, being all other major rappers rolled into one (thereby explaining why Game name-drops so much, because he has all of those rappers in him)...it's just a goofy gimmick, and I never thought it was solid.  It's just proof that Game is studio-manufactured.  He's entirely fueled and supported and market-tested by an image, namely a stereotypical "gangsta" rapper.

Put You on the Game is a great beat, but so what...it's not supposed to be an album of house/techno music, it's a rap album, and I judge it as an entire package -- song concepts, the overall album concept, insights, emotional resonance, good production is just a part of it.

So, all in all, it's an ok album -- nothing more, nothing less...and really has no weight whatsoever.  Does anybody listen to any of the songs on the album, let alone the album in total, and get the feeling that you've never heard that before, or it sheds insight into anything you can relate to, or whether it sounds artistically inspired?  I strongly argue no -- it's just studio-crafted music, not true art.  And therefore it isn't anywhere near classic.

Easily games best album.Doctors advocate was good and lax was an abortion.He seems to get worse every album,lets see how red is.I still have high hopes for it.

If Game hadnt been a disloyal fuck,the shady,aftermath,g unit empire would still be number one today.

Personal classic for me, this album takes me back to my freshman year in high school. Had a few fillers but still a near classic with great production.

To tell the truth, when Game first came out I was getting tired of the Unit at that time and wasn't looking forward to hearing another one of them. I liked his singles but I briefly listened to the album cuz the homie next door had it. I wasn't feeling it when i heard it. I eventually became a Game fan after hearing him on mixtapes by DJ Strong and Warrior. But to this day I have not gone and given The Documentary a second listen.

an old friend of mine recommended this song when it came out, but i wasn't feeling it.
now i think it's decent at best.
