Terry stripped of England captaincy
« on: February 05, 2010, 09:04:17 AM »
John Terry has been stripped of the England captaincy with Fabio Capello appointing Rio Ferdinand as his replacement.

The England manager informed Terry that his position as captain was untenable following recent revelations about his personal life. Their 12-minute meeting at Wembley Stadium this afternoon was described as "civil", with Capello thanking Terry for his performances since taking the job in 2008.

The Italian said he had always kept the best interests of the national team at the forefront of his mind but made it clear that recent adverse publicity had come to overshadow the team's preparations for this summer's World Cup finals. Terry's captaincy was called into question after a controversial super-injunction was overturned in the High Court, allowing the disclosure the Chelsea defender has been accused of conducting an affair with Wayne Bridge's ex-girlfriend, Vanessa Perroncel.

Ferdinand, the Manchester United defender, will be confirmed as Terry's replacement, with Steven Gerrard promoted to vice-captain.

"After much thought, I have made the decision that it will be best for me to take the captaincy away from John Terry," Capello said in a statement. "As a captain with the team, John Terry has displayed extremely positive behaviour. However, I have to take into account other considerations and what is best for all of the England squad.

"What is best for all of the England team has inspired my choice. John Terry was notified first. When I chose John Terry as captain, I also selected a vice-captain and also named a third choice. There is no reason to change this decision.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the FA, particularly Lord David Triesman and Ian Watmore, for allowing me to make this decision in my own time and in the best interest of the team."

Terry is understood to be devastated by Capello's decision but the Chelsea defender hinted that he would continue to be heavily involved with the national team.

"I fully respect Fabio Capello's decision," Terry said in a statement. "I will continue to give everything for England."

Earlier, Perroncel revealed that she would not sell her story and expressed her sadness at the decision to drop Terry. In a statement read on her behalf by publicist Max Clifford, she said: "The details of my friendship with John and his family have been the subject of intense and wholly unfair and untrue media speculation. I now find myself subject to other unsubstantiated and false claims which have appeared in the papers over the past few days. This has only added to the pressure which my family and I have been under.

"I have decided I do not want to speak publicly about the speculation since it only seems to add more fuel to the fire. I have a three-year-old son and he is my main concern. I do not believe speaking to newspapers or the media is in his interest or my own. I do not wish to add anything more to what I have said."

Capello, who is due to attend the Euro 2012 qualifying draw in Warsaw on Sunday, appointed Terry as his permanent captain in August 2008 having given Gerrard and Ferdinand a chance to "audition" for the role in a series of friendly matches.

Rio Ferdinand?

He's even worse with his behaviour. This is a little too hypocritical for me to strip Terry of it for something not even to do with Football then give it to someone who elbows people in the face and failed to turn up for a drugs test getting a 12month ban.

Also, Terry is by far and away the better defender of the two anyway.

Oh well, theyre both cunts anyway.

Aye, if we lose to of all people USA in this tournament there would be outrage across England like definitely.

But we won't. USA's main man Clint Dempsey might not even make it. Other than him there arent many players I'm worried about. It won't be easy for us but we should by all rights win it 1-0 or 2-0. You never know with England though...we're great at bottling it and fucking up on the big stage!

Indeed, the hollywood movies love to paint us as the damsel in distress and America as the strapping young lad that came to save us. If only Hollywood was reality...

I'm loving the fact that Cappello takes no bullshit from any of his players. Not saying its the right decision as I think Terry probably should of kept it. Its not even guarenteed that Rio will be going to the World Cup at this time.
