lol guys, im glad that you're worried about Ras haha... seriously tho, are you guys interested in actually physical albums from any artist? I personally like to collect that stuff - we could have released this mixtape purely digitally like the quarterly and sell it on bandcamp and itunes like we did before... but we wanted to try something new with this project... just like how we did the "choose you price" concept for the quarterly

This project is doing well so far.. everyones talking about it (even if its 75 percent negative haha), and over 1500 dollars has been raised in 2 days... The industry has changed and people need to try some new ideas... the choose your price format worked well for the Quarterly

I don't think anyone really gives a shit about their name being published on some site that very few people will actually check (why not publish it on the album itself?).

Maybe he should just put his shit on iTunes to cut back on the costs of the physical production of the CDs and vinyls themselves.

First idea is actually an excellent one, and one that I think his fans would love. Second idea is common sense seeing as to how a lot of artist do itunes only albums. Is Ras just not that bright? Or are we correct in assuming he's broke.

Maybe.  No disrespect to anyone, but seriously, if you want to put out something independent, fund it yourself (if you're an established rapper) or find someone with cake to invest in your project, which I don't doubt he had to have tried, though perhaps people who he reached out to aren't expecting big returns on their investment, so he had to reach out to the fans.  I think it's cool that they have already raised that much (if it is indeed true), but still.  Asking the fans for money to release a project is the last thing to do.

Fans who donate $15 or more will receive a hard copy of the album, as well as their name published on Rass Kass’ website Savetheraskass.com.

Individuals who donate $1,000 or more will receive a limited edition set of lyrics to Nature of the Threat, handwritten by the rapper, a signed copy of the CD, a vinyl press of the new album, limited edition t-shirts, a phone call from Kass, a special producer credit on the album, as well as a shout out, and to top it off, for the fans who pledge a $1000 plus will get free entrance to any Ras Kass show this year.

man, I'm a fan of Ras Kass and RasKassCentral ... BUT

Ras' marketing team need to work their press releases ALOT better than this.
It makes him look desperate and like he is relying on the fans cash to put out his music.

Read the article "Kass will look to the fans for financial support to help produce the physical CDs" & "With the help from fans of his music, the West Coast MC hopes to raise $3,800 in the next 2 months". Words like "support" "raise" and "donate" don't give this a good look.

so again, if i was working with Ras' team, I'd boot my publicist in the ass and get them to set things straight. The article should read something like "Veteran West Coast MC Ras Kass is trying something new to revive the industries slumping physical CD sales by offering fans etc etc"

No diss, just how i see it.

perhaps a viable business model for smaller artists in the future, but as a prerequisite for the album actually coming out in the first place, a little lame.

I am actually a huge Ras Kass fan and I might have jumped on something like this in the past but I learned my lesson about 5 years ago when he was pre-selling that first mixtape on E-Bay and I ordered it but never got a thing.

this isnt an album.. Ras describes it as a mixtape/project... This project is going to be released regardless of the amount of pledges received on the kickstarter site... The Kickstarter site is not to give Donations to Ras Kass... the kickstarter site is a way for people to get a limited edition CD or Vinyl of the Ras Kass x DJ Rhettmatic ADIDAS mixtape - this is going to be a classic west coast real hip hop mixtape

here's a decent article a blogger wrote about this project: http://www.thisisbooksmusic.com/2010/02/18/some-stuffs-record-crack-ras-kass-uses-kickstarter-for-new-album/

Quote
...Ras is using Kickstarter as a way to release the album to fans who want it... The goal is to raise $3800 by mid-April, and various donations come with different package deals, consider it like making an advance order....

....Some may think “WTF, this sounds fishy” but Ras Kass is not the first artist to do this. A lot of artists, including Monday Michiru, have often created similar projects where you become an “executive producer of sorts, so that if you support them and want the music, you make a donation towards it. When it’s done, you get a copy of it, plain and simple. With this Ras Kass/Kickstarter, you make a donation which sits in escrow with Amazon.com. You will not be charged until the last day of the donation period, and only if he has received the donation amount requested. If the amount isn’t reached, you do not get charged, simple as that.

Whoa some of yall are just straight up on Games nuts.. this is homo like..and then you are acting hard.. homo plus acting hard is even more homo..

I personally know Ras and I wouldnt say hes broke.  He makes income off of shows and features and its a decent living.. he pays his rent and is able to do his part for everything.. No he doesnt have millions of dollars because hes not at that level.  But hes trying to use innovative ideas and the power of the internet to gain more money or create his buzz again.  Its working also.. If there is even a forum thread about it then its working.  Source..Dubcnn..Allhiphop..hiphopdx..everywhere hip hop heads are paying attention to the story..  This is just one of the new ways to do things in the music biz.  Get on or get out..
