I think the leagues in Russia, Czech Rep., and Sweden holds pretty good standard - not sure though.

Jaromir Jagr left the NHL to play in the Czech hockey league.

Not sure anyone compares to Gretzky lol. But most great players end up coming over, but I'm sure some stay. U see more NHL great European veterans leaving the NHL for their hometown league after their best years are behind them (Jagr, Naslund, Forsberg, etc)

The current Russian league has teams that started in the old USSR and threy have plenty of great players attached to their history. Valeri Kharlamov is considered one of the best to ever play the game. His CSKA Moscow would play NH teams for exhibition and the CSKA Moscow team has a landslide winning record against the NHL, historically. But after the Cold War ended and Russians were allowed to leave Russia and come to the US the Russian league obviously suffered. The NHL is the best league in the world, but the world still has leagues that do well and create decent stars. Like how Japan has a baseball league. Anyone that's at the MLB level will most likely come to the MLB, but some still stay behind.

The KHL seems like its picking up steam, theres been a couple Russians who have defected from the Nhl to go back to Russia and play (Zherdev, Radulov, Morozov are top end talents) Just take a look at the Russian olympic team, they've got 2 whole lines of players that currently play in the KHL. There was a rumour going around that Kovulchuk has a 20 million dollar offer to go back and play there, so obviously they can offer competitive contracts.  The NHL should be careful how they treat the 2014 Olympics,  Ovechkin and a few others have said that they're going to play regardless if the NHL is on board or not, which means they'd have to be playing for European teams that season..   the NHL could lose some of their best players if it chooses not to participate.

I'd like to go see a MODO game,  from the Swedish Elite League. They must have a helluva system.. they've had some pretty elite players who all seem very loyal to the franchise.  Naslund and Forsberg both began their careers with the team and are now finishing their careers there ( for free by the way), but they've also had the Sedins, Viktor Hedman and Tobias Enstrom

most of the players playing in the KHL sucked at the Olympics as they couldn't handle the pace of play.

99% of the best players in the world are in the NHL
