What's the story behind Dr. Dre's "My Life"?
« on: April 12, 2010, 10:15:21 PM »
So I'm sure this topic has probably been done before, but ever since I heard it I thought it was a dope song. Anyways whats the deal with this song. Here's what I know about it I guess:

  • DOC is on it, and he left Death Row in late 94(?), so it can't be any later than that I guess
  • It was recorded for "The Chronic II"
  • There is probably more to it, since it seems theres a major edit in the middle (I think, havent listened that intently)

Anyways, so whats the deal with this. And what else was recorded for that album? I think it would've been a pretty awesome album most likely with stuff like "California Love" and some others on it. Dre seemed to have the magic touch around then (95ish), just like in '92, '99, and so on/ And no, I don't really have any hope of hearing it since I'm pretty sure Dre has it in his vault, and even if it was in the possession of Death Row/Wideawake they've ran the label so badly that he would probably never let them release any of that anyways.

Well, back on those old death row forums, some insider claimed that the only songs recorded for the chronic 2 were Cali love, Blunt Tyme, and some song called Back Pay that we've never heard. He then mentioned a song called OG 2 BG that people thought was for the Chronic 2 but was actually recorded some time before.

So I think that this song we've been calling 'My Life' is actually called OG 2 BG. That would make perfect sense since OG 2 BG was supposedly from before the Chronic 2 sessions, and my life has the DOC on it so its def from before those sessions. My Life doesn't sound like any of the songs associated w/ Helter Skelter... and production wise it feels like 94. It doesn't feel like the stuff Dre was making in 95/96.

It's tough to say if this was recorded for any project in particular... i could see it fitting Murder Was the Case....

as far as the vault is concerned, I don't think Dre is going to leak ne thing from the vault... and he isn't going to let WA sell anything... but I'm sure enough random ppl have these songs (just due to being associated with DR back in the day) that we'll see them eventually through leaks/bootlegs.

And of course as soon as you make this thread, I search youtube for the song, and someone has decided to bless us with a full, much higher quality version of the song.

better quality than the one we all had before, and this version has an outro.

I'm almost 100% sure that this was recorded after Dr. Dre left Death Row.

I've posted this version here over a year ago - if you want, I can upload it again :)

I stand corrected.

Based on how it sounds, it couldn't have been recorded after 97 though. It sounds like it came before the Chronic 2001 ish...

"My Life" is not the same song as "OG To BG". I remember when "Chronic 2000: Still Smokin'" was going to be released by Death Row, they said it was going to include 2 / 4 unreleased Dr. Dre songs. One was "OG To BG" (I think Soopafly re-done Dr. Dre's verse) and the other one was "Ho Hopper" (I can't remember what the other 2 songs were). But Dr. Dre tried to sue or did sue Death Row before they could release them.
Therefore "OG To BG" and "My Life" are two different songs.
