Jose Guillen has had 5 homers in 4 days for the Royals!
« on: April 15, 2010, 09:08:53 AM »
I think Jose is on the juice again.

He's one of those players that plays for money, he's making 12 million a season with the Royals, and this is the last year of his contract.  So after earning 12 million dollars to lead the team in errors, play himself out of rightfield, and hit around .250 and 12 homers last season... this season as a DH he is hitting over .300 with huge power numbers and seems determined to get another big contract after the season.

...but if any team signs him it should be for a 1 year contract.

he'll fall back down to Earth.

i remember a few years back Chris Shelton lead the league with like fourteen homeruns early, just killing the ball; but he wasn't even on the roster anymore by the All-Star break, i don't think. :P

but good for Jose & your Royals. ;D

You also gotta show love every 5 days when Grenike pitches.  He and Linescum are the best pitchers in the game now, not named Halladay.  Grenike is fun to watch.

There are other things going on for the Royals to get excited about. Jose Guillen on a hot streak is not one of them.  Knowing this is Jose Guillen's last season as  Royal is something to get excited about.

Decided to check out this fielding stats from last year and...haha, just horrible.  Despite only playing 69 games in the OF last year he pulled off a -18.7 UZR which pretty much made him the worst defensive outfielder in the league considering how many innings he logged in.
Looking at more stats and he was just god awful in 2009.  He posted a -1.9 WAR in '09 playing in only half the games.  He might have had a worse season than Betancourt if he played the whole year.
What a terrible signing this was for KC.  :-X

LOL.. yep.. and that's actually the buzz in KC is over Royals GM Dayton Moore's blatant disregard for stats.  We have a popular blogger here www.ranyontheroyals.com that even had his own radio show before the Royals actually blackballed him from coming to games so he got pissed off and hardly blogs now...

But anyway, this dude worked for baseball prospectus and is up on all the new statistics that are available these days, and he shows how time and time again Royals GM Dayton Moore has gone against what stats would indicate and instead gone with his "gut feeling".  The Betencourt signing had so many people outraged in the city, because Dayton even admitted he went against the stats on that signing and signed him instead because of talent and potential.

Hardly any GM goes with baseball prospectus' statistics though.  And the ones working in a MLB Front Office probably have their own advance statistics to work with.

Well I think baseball prospectus is very cutting edge and some GM's are going to start going by the numbers and a new trend will happen where traditional scouting is used less, and the advanced statistics begin doing all the work for these GM's.

Yo, by the way, a new story came out in the local paper today.  Turns out Guillen almost died during the offseason last year, he had bloodclots in his legs so bad he couldn't walk for around a month, he lost all his wieght and strength and everything.

He says he's back healthy now and that he wasnt ever really healthy last year and that as his strength increases hes going to get even better!

Jose Guillen your 2010 MLB MVP!?

Doubt we'll ever see scouting used less.  I've been preaching on this board in favor sabermetrics since 2004, and there is still snickering when some of the commentators talk about it, and can't even imagine what front offices around the league feel about it.  Casual fans of the game don't want any of it.  What's the first thing that pops up on a telecast when they introduce a batter?  BA, HR, RBI.  It's rare when they show the person's OBP, let alone OPS.  ESPN is known to do it, but they only broadcast a couple of games per week.

That buzz has been going on for years lol.  I'm just still pissed that the Dodgers let go of Paul DePodesta.

He's batting almost close to his career average, I think it's only about to get worse.
