Say hello to the Jolly Green Giant: Shaq to the Celtics?

Quote
Shaquille O'Neal will probably sign with the Boston Celtics tonight or Wednesday, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard.

NBA.com and Comcast SportsNet New England indicated that the Celtics were "close" to signing the four-time NBA champion.

"For me, it's been a real thinking process," O'Neal told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "I came into the league very graciously and want to go out very graciously. My main thought was I would like to play for a winning franchise, somebody that's used to winning, somebody that keeps winning. Hopefully, I'll make my decision here in the next one or two days."

The Celtics can offer only the veteran minimum salary ($1.35 million for a veteran of 10-plus NBA seasons), but Cleveland could facilitate a sign-and-trade with Boston if the 38-year-old center wants more money.

-- Houston Mitchell

Okay, even though Shaq is older than dirt, I think that his good for 6-10 minutes a game off the bench backing up Perkins and J. O'Neal. This will put the Celtics as favorite for the Eastern Conference.

The Big Shamrock! 8)

The Celtics are a given for the playoffs & in all honesty this isn't that terrible of a move considering Perkins is gone until Febuary.

He squares off against LeBron & the Heat in the first game of the season; should be ill. Maybe a brawl. :P

Great move for the Celtics. There not a run and gun team so Shaq should fit right in. Talk about quite the veteran team. Pierce, Garnett, Allen, Shaq & J.O'Neal. Good move with Perkins out too. And Rondo is the centerpiece of it all  8)

This is a good signing for the Celtics. Slowed down or not, he is still a big body in the paint and will be a much better fit with Boston than he was with Cleveland.

Btw, Shaq was saying for weeks that the Spurs were his first choice...and that they had interest too. He said he wanted to play alongside Duncan. But the Celtics are signing him for the Vet min...which we could have also. So Im guessing the Spurs really werent interested.

The Spurs don't want player who think they are better than they are. That's also why the Heat wanted nothing of T-Mac, why the Bulls didn't want him after talking to him in person and why nobody even thinks of Iverson.

Yeah, the Spurs just want players who will fit into the system. T-Mac would be a great addition for us, if he was just willing to accept the fact that he is a bench/role player now. I would love him backing up Jefferson.

Shaq has been on two teams (Suns and Cavs) that were horrible fits for him. Those years were just wasted. But he just keeps getting older and cant get those years back. He will be a much better fit on this Celtics team. He doesnt need to play 30 minutes a game or anything. People like to hate on Shaq, but he can still be valueable in the right setting.

He was still eating off that 5-year contract he signed with the Heat. So the Suns and the Cavs paid him 20,000,000 per year. Now that this contract is finally over with, he needs to play for waaaaay WAY less, maybe even the vets min. He put up some nice stats with the Suns, but he didn't really do anything for the Cavs. He's gonna fit better in Boston, though. But there might be character issues, like with any future HOF player when he's washed up and wasted and has a huge ego.

I'd probably take T-Mac (if he's healthy) over Jefferson at this point. I've always liked Jefferson as a player, but it doesn't really seem like he did shit for you guys last year. At least T-Mac can be somewhat of a facilitator on offense.

Problem here is, that T-Mac would think he's the 2nd best player on the Spurs. LOL
At least Jefferson knows he ain't shit.
